Why I love this recipe

Baked apples have a naturally sweet flavor that is enhanced when they are baked. Adding a filling of oatmeal crunch and cinnamon make this dessert extra special. Additionally, creating this recipe is a simple process requiring minimal effort, making these a convenient dessert option.

Ingredients

You need the following ingredients for these baked apples with oatmeal:

  • Apples: Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji or Honeycrisp apples work well for this recipe. Use a medium-sized apple. Bake an additional 5 minutes if using large apples.
  • Oatmeal: use old-fashioned rolled oats - not quick cooking oatmeal
  • Light brown sugar, cinnamon and unsalted butter
  • Walnuts (optional): lightly toast and chop walnuts before using

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Follow the detailed in instructions in the recipe card below. Also, check out the following video for a quick visual of the recipe steps.

Variations

Consider one or more of the following for a little variation in this baked apple dessert:

  • Vegan - these baked apples with oatmeal are easily made vegan. Just replace the butter with margarine or a vegan butter substitute.
  • Nut-Free - simply eliminate the walnuts.
  • Dried Fruit - consider adding a ¼ cup of raisins or dried cranberries to the filling for more taste and texture

Equipment

You don't need any fancy equipment to make these old-fashioned baked apples. The following items will help to ensure a successful dessert:

  • Rimmed baking dish: the butter and apple juices will seep out while baking. Be sure to place on a baking dish with a rim to keep your oven clean.
  • Paring knife or serrated spoon: to create a well in the center of the apples.

Storage and serving

These old-fashioned baked apples are best served the day they are made. If pressed for time, consider assembling the apples, place in refrigerator and bake when you are ready to serve.

Top tip

The baked apples are best served warm. After baking, let the apples rest for 15 minutes. Then place on a serving dish and enjoy!
