What Is National Cocktail Day?

March 24th is National Cocktail Day in the US, a day when we celebrate all things cocktails. A day to raise our glasses to the artistry of mixologists and make a toast to the long history of cocktail making.

Visit your favorite cocktail bar in South Florida and join in the celebrations.

A Brief History Of The Cocktail

The first time the word ‘cocktail’ was recorded was in London in the Morning Post on 20th March 1798. It mentions a drink described as a cocktail.

The second mention was in the USA in a diary that was found and subsequently published in the Famer’s Cabinet on 28th April 1803 in New Hampshire. It is a highly amusing story. A real game-changer was the production of ice In the early 1800s.

In the 1960s, during prohibition, homemade liquor, which tasted pretty nasty, was flavored with honey and juices to mask the taste.

In 1962 Jerry Thomas, considered the father of mixology in America, created a bartenders guide titled “How to Mix Drinks” and in it, he shared 10 of his cocktail recipes.

In 2013 freelance writer Jace Shoemaker-Galloway who specialized in writing about various holidays decided to make up a few of her own; hence National Cocktail Day is celebrated on March 24th each year. She was a big fan of the cocktail, so thank you, Jace.

Ideas For Celebrating National Cocktail Day

There are many ways to celebrate National Cocktail Day. Here are a few to consider.

  1. Cocktail Recipe Book

There are some amazing books available, a classic being, The Savoy Cocktail Book. Learn how to make a knock-out cocktail, then invite your friends and impress the socks off them.

  1. Celebrate At Home

If you are unable to get out of the house, no problem. Ask a few of your closest friends to join you at home to celebrate.

Ask each couple to bring the ingredients for their favorite cocktail which they will make for everyone to sample. This is a great way to taste new cocktails. Maybe don’t sample them all or you may end up having a very early night and remember nothing the next day.

  1. Celebrate With Friends

Why not go on down to Galuppi’s in Pompano Beach and try one of their famous cocktails? Their inspirational mixologists will be only too happy to quench your thirst with a cold ‘White Sangria,’ which is a delicious mix of Pinot Grigio, Bacardi, peach puree, citrus, club soda, and tropical fruit.

If you are feeling adventurous, ask for Kelvin’s frozen cocktail, which is changed daily. For the purists, there is the highly popular Margarita with a twist. Check out the whole cocktail menu to see what beer and wine Galuppi’s has, too.

Each cocktail is prepared with passion by mixologists who love their work. Want something off the menu? Don’t hesitate to ask. If you are not an alcohol fan, no problem; our staff will be delighted to prepare a delicious alcohol-free Mocktail for you
