Costco Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin - How to Cook + Review

Sliced Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin at Costco

I’ve been eyeing the prepared Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin from Costco for quite a while now and finally pulled the trigger when they offered a $5 discount on the package. The sliced grass-fed beef sirloin is fully cooked and can be eaten cold or reheated.

If you don’t have a sous vide at home, or if you don’t want to spend the time making a steak in this manner, then this is a great option for some perfectly cooked sirloin for a quick weeknight dinner.

Just remember, any prepared meal comes with a markup.

Costco Cost Comparison

Costco sells the prepackaged sous vide grass-fed sirloin for $11.49; most packages hover right in that 2-pound range.

My package was 2.09 pounds and retailed for $24.01, but given that Costco was running a $5 discount, I paid $19.01 for the beef. Not a bad price considering it’s grass-fed and already prepared for you.

For reference, Costco sells USDA Choice Top Sirloin for $7.99 a pound in the fresh meat and seafood department, and they sell USDA Prime Top Sirloin for $9.49 a pound.

The Cuisine Solutions grass-fed beef doesn’t list the grade of the beef, so I can’t be sure of what grade it is. I just hope that it isn’t USDA select (below choice).

Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin Taste Test

I had the sliced grass-fed beef sirloin with some jalapeno poppers, and I have to say the beef was all around mediocre. I liked some things about it and some I didn’t care so much for.

Not The Best Presentation

What I Liked

The main selling point of this already prepared grass-fed beef sirloin over some of Costco’s other meat or beef options is convenience.

This meat is seasoned, and sous vide to a medium-rare and ready to be eaten straight from the packaging if you want to. (I don’t recommend it as some of the fat looked to be a little crystallized, but it is an option.)

Unheated Beef Sirloin

If you want to heat it, the meat needs just about a minute on a low-heat pan to warm to eating temperature. I can’t complain about how quickly a meal can be put on the table with this beef sirloin.

What Was Just Ok

The seasoning is going to be your average run of the mill pre packaged seasoning. I’ve had a few of the other marinated beef options at Costco, such as the arrachera (amazing for carne asada) and the marinated tri-tip, which had that same salty pre-packaged seasoning taste.

All three of the steak options that I’ve tried at Costco have claimed to have been seasoned differently, but there is some underlying processed flavor that happens to be present.

Warmed Beef Sirloin

I also didn’t care much for how thinly sliced the beef sirloin was. I could have looked a little closer at the packaging to truly see that they are sliced extremely thin, but I didn’t notice it until I started to handle the beef.

I would have liked a thicker cut, but I think I know why this wouldn’t have been feasible with this product (See Below).

What I Didn’t Like

I had my suspicions about the quality of the beef from the start, and while I still don’t know the grade of the beef, I will say that the beef isn’t the most tender piece of meat I’ve ever eaten. Even when sliced thin, it was chewy at times.

Not the worst in the world, and you don’t have to worry about getting a jaw workout at dinner time, but the meat definitely could be a little more tender. Even cooking the beef in a sous vide couldn’t save it.

How to Cook Costco’s Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin

Costco’s grass-fed beef sirloin is already cooked, and sous vide to perfection but can be reheated before consumption. It is also ok to eat straight out of the packaging if you want to.

Heating the steak is easy to do and involves heating the individual slices and the beef juice on a medium to low heat pan. You want to make sure that you are just warming or reheating the beef rather than actually cooking it any further.

Stovetop cooking directions

  • Open the pouch and remove beef and natural juices
  • Separate beef into individual slices (Discard the plastic pouch and compost the tray)
  • Preheat the Non-stick pan on medium-low heat
  • Add beef slices and juices
  • Turn continuously for 30 seconds to 1 minute or until the desired doneness.

The contents will be hot. (The manufacturer provided this warning, but the contents shouldn’t actually be hot. You will have done something wrong if the beef is hot.)

Heating instructions are approximate and can vary depending on your stovetop model.

Beef Sirloin Nutrition and Calorie Information

Because this is a prepared beef product that is already seasoned, the nutritional label and calorie count will be slightly different from regular unprepared beef sirloin. Thankfully this product uses good ingredients, and the only one that stands out to me is the small amount of sugar.

One serving size is 3 ounces and contains 120 calories from 5 grams of fat, 19 grams of protein, and 1 gram of carbohydrates. The carbohydrates are from the seasoning, particularly the one added gram of sugar per serving. The full nutritional label is as follows:

As you can see, pretty standard nutritional label with the major difference being the one gram of added sugar. For those watching their carbs, the one gram of sugar is there and not a big deal, but also probably unnecessary.

Final Thoughts

Not the best, not the worst. I didn’t care for the quality of Costco’s grass-fed beef sirloin, but I understand the convenience factor.

I probably won’t be purchasing it again in the future as I could buy a higher quality raw steak from the meat and seafood department and also have the enjoyment of cooking it just how I like it.
