Sour Cream and Chive Dip

  • Sour Cream: Full-fat and low-fat versions are fine for this dip, but avoid using fat-free sour cream—you can really taste the difference in this dip. You can also replace some or all of the sour cream with crème fraîche or Greek yogurt instead. 
  • Mayonnaise: Again, avoid fat-free versions, but otherwise choose whatever brand of mayonnaise you prefer. 
  • Onion Powder: Dehydrated onion flakes can be used instead of onion powder. 
  • Garlic Powder: Feel free to substitute 1-2 minced fresh garlic cloves if you prefer. 
  • Chives: The look and flavor of fresh chives really makes this dip sing. To double down on the onion flavor, you could add in some minced shallots or minced green onions as well.

Stir together 1 cup Sour Cream, ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper in a medium bowl.

Then stir in ½ cup chopped chives, reserving a ½ teaspoon chives to garnish.

Cover with plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

Sprinkle with reserved chives to serve.

Is sour cream and chive dip healthy?

Full-fat Sour cream is fairly high in calories and fat, though it is lower in calories than mayonnaise. For an even healthier version, replace some or all of the sour cream with Greek yogurt. This dip is also gluten-free and vegetarian.

How long will this sour cream and chives dip last?

Store your sour cream dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for 3-5 days. Stir well before serving. Unfortunately, like most dairy-based foods, this dip does not freeze well.

Check the expiration date for your spices—if you have anything in your pantry over a few years old, consider purchasing a new spice bottle. Spices do get old over time and lose flavor dramatically.
