One of the best things about this recipe is that you probably already have the simple ingredients needed to make it: tortillas, a light spray of oil, and a pinch of salt. If not, a quick run to the grocery store and you're in business!

We love these Air Fryer Tortilla strips because they are easy and quick to make especially on those rushed weeknights. The crunchy topping will take your salad or soup to the next level.

But what we love even more is seasoning them with a variety of spices, from traditional salt to bold chili lime or even sweet cinnamon sugar. Season to your personal preference to compliment your favorite recipes.

This recipe works for both yellow corn tortillas and flour tortillas. Our aim is always to achieve that golden-brown color and satisfying crunch, which we can usually reach with just a few minutes of cooking time.

Ingredients

Scroll to the bottom of the post for precise amounts and printable recipe card.

Yellow corn tortillas - or white corn tortillas. You can choose any size because you'll be cutting them into strips (or chips) if desired.

Flour tortillas - another type of tortilla to use for variety.

Avocado cooking spray - or another cooking spray you like such as olive oil spray.

Coarse salt - we like sea salt.

Instructions

To transform our tortillas into perfect strips, we need to use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter for precision. We aim to cut the tortillas into thin strips or triangular tortilla wedges, depending on our preference. The key is to maintain uniformity for even cooking.

  • Thin Strips: Slice the tortillas into ½-inch wide strips for a delicate crunch.
  • Tortilla Wedges: Cut the tortillas into quarters or eighths for a classic chip shape.

Once the tortillas are cut, place them in the air fryer basket. It's okay if they are slightly overlapping. In fact, that will help them stay in place when the hot air is circulating in the basket.

Spray the air fryer basket first, then add the strips and give them a spritz. Toss the strips a bit being sure they are lightly and evenly sprayed. Add a sprinkle of salt over the tortilla strips.

Air fry the tortillas at 380 degrees F for 3 to 4 minutes, shaking the basket at the halfway point.

For best results, check the strips often after the halfway mark. The tortilla strips can burn quickly.

Tips

  • You can vary the size of the strips to your liking.
  • Air fryer tortilla chips or wedges may need a couple more minutes of cook time, but it's still important to keep an eye on them so they don't burn.
  • I prefer to undercook my strips a touch because they get crispier as they cool.
  • Try a sprinkle of garlic powder, chili powder, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice for a delicious Mexican taste that will rival your favorite restaurant-style tortilla chips.

How to store

To keep your tortilla chips fresh, let them cool to room temperature before storing them.

Place the strips in an airtight container and store at room temperature. They should stay crisp for a couple of days.

Serving suggestions

Our favorite way to serve these is on a taco salad or chicken tortilla soup.

Another great way to serve them is with a delicious chili recipe like this ground beef chili or this crockpot cream cheese white chicken chili.

The easiest way to serve them if you don't have any recipes made up is to pile them on some refried beans or guacamole with a side of salsa.

Common questions

Do we need to add oil to tortilla strips before air frying?

Lightly spray the strips with cooking oil for extra crispiness. Alternatively, you can toss the strips in a large bowl with a teaspoon of oil.

Can we cook corn and flour tortilla strips the same way?

Yes, but keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

Is preheating the air fryer necessary?

It's not essential, but we find that preheating cooks the strips faster.

How do we ensure even cooking?

Arrange the strips in a single layer (some overlapping is okay) and avoid overcrowding. Shake the basket midway through cooking.

Can we season the tortilla strips?

Absolutely. We  toss them with our favorite seasonings right after cooking.

Are air fryer tortilla strips healthier?

Yes, they're typically lower in fat and calories compared to deep-fried alternatives.
