Nach’ of the Day – Slice, Tintagel

I’ll find Nachos anywhere and in this week’s edition of Nach’ of the Day I managed to find -and completely devour- vegan nachos in Tintagel, Cornwall.

So why was I in Tintagel?

I’ve been holidaying in Cornwall over the last few days, eating everything in sight and cultivating mass in preparation for a cold Winter.

In between food courses, I was also doing some sight-seeing with Tintagel Castle high on my list. If you’re ever in Cornwall, Tintagel Castle and the surrounding trails are a must see. I’ll leave it there because I only review things that I can fit in my mouth. You can go here for more info about the Castle itself.

Tintagel itself is part tourist trap, part bohemian sanctuary with its cobbled streets hosting wiccan shops and pasty shops side-by-side. It’s a place that feels very ‘cool’ and alternative but I was still surprised to see vegan nachos on the menu of a pasty shop. Let’s see how they performed.

Venue – Tintagel, Cornwall
Home or Away? – Away
Price – £
Tactics – Two person sharer

Naughtiness
Immediately, without even tasting them, these nachos got bonus points for being vegan. That’s not to say that vegan immediately means better (I’m sure we’ll come across crap vegan nachos on this nacho journey) but I think it shows additional consideration by the chef and encourages them to be a little more creative with the toppings.

Slice have thrown all of their artistic license into the chilli. Crammed full of veggies, it felt more like a vegan lasagne ragu rather than a chilli mix but it was delicious. Large chunks of carrot stood out to me as a bit weird and i’m still deciding whether Slice should be derided for flouting the nacho rules or commended for breaking them.

Aesthetic
These nachos don’t look pretty, there’s no real way around that. However, once I had closed the box and allowed the vegan cheese to melt, we started to get some gooey, mozzarella goodness.

Crunch
Slice are extremely high-scoring here. Texture-wise, these nachos were perfect as the chilli to chip ratio was spot on. We had the entire gamut of nacho textures here; nachos wrapped in melted cheese, soggy nachos caked in chilli, a bottom layer of dry, untouched nachos used to scoop up the carrot stragglers. It was good fun eating these.

Heartiness
The portion size was generous so at £5 I can’t really have any complaints, especially when you consider that I bought these from an independent cafe. The large portion is definitely needed if you’ve just spent 3 hours hiking around the Castle.

Overall
If you’re looking for vegan food in Tintagel, you can do a lot worse than visit Slice and try out their vegan nachos. They also do a vegan cheese and onion pasty if you’re a heathen who doesn’t like nachos (why are you here though, go find a dedicated pasty reviewer!).

The only reason why this is only a 3/5 score is due to the lack of extras; no guac, no sour cream, no salsa. Sure, the carrots were a controversial, daring addition but I need some additional dips guys!

Final score
