Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise Recalled due to listeria monocytogens

Products Recalled:

Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise, available in 230-gram jars.

Problem:

Potts Partnership Ltd has issued a voluntary recall of Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise on July 21st, 2023. This product has been recalled due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, which can potentially cause serious illness in humans. Potts Partnership issued this product recall to ensure that consumers do not consume this product and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. Point of sale notices have been issued, explaining why consumers should not consume this product and what should be done if they have already purchased it [1].

Scientific Evidence:

Listeria monocytogenes has been identified as a harmful pathogen in food. In humans, Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, which includes meningitis and bacteremia, with a high case fatality rate. Listeria monocytogenes may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children, the elderly, and others with weak immune systems. Although healthy people may only have short-term symptoms such as a high temperature, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach discomfort, and diarrhoea, listeria infection can result in miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women [2].

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • According to the legislation, Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a risk that an establishment producing a ready to eat product exposed to the post-lethality environment must control via its HACCP plan or prevent in the processing environment by a sanitation SOP or other necessary programme.
  • It further stipulates that a ready to eat product is adulterated if it includes Lm or comes into direct contact with a contaminated food contact surface.
  • In-plant inspection personnel (IPP) are responsible for confirming compliance.
  • The relevant HACCP or SSOP task will be implemented to finish and document the verification [3].
