How To Make A Lazy Eye Coffee

A lazy eye Coffee is a slightly less caffeinated version of the previously featured red eye coffee. These caffeinated drinks are the same in every way but one- and the difference lies in the drip coffee.

In order to make a Lazy Eye Coffee, you will use decaffeinated coffee beans for the drip coffee.

You will combine the espresso and the decaf black coffee in order to get a less concentrated, lesser caffeinated drink!

HOW TO MAKE A Lazy EYE COFFEE

To make a lazy eye coffee, you will need to brew both, drip coffee and a double shot of espresso simultaneously. If you are unfamiliar with these methods, you can find our more in-depth guides for each method below.

To make a shot of espresso, water is forced through finely-ground coffee beans under a lot of pressure. On its way through, it makes the “extraction”- taking the water-soluble characteristics of coffee from the ground coffee beans.

To make drip coffee, hot water is poured over ground coffee and allowed to slowly drip through the coffee grinds. As gravity does its work, the hot water slowly makes the coffee extraction.

Combine the extracted coffee from both these methods- and you end up with your lazy eye coffee!

INGREDIENTS

Dark Roast Coffee Beans

We recommend using dark, or espresso roast coffee for your shot of espresso. This will give your espresso the best flavor and texture. Our personal favorite is Equator Coffees– lots of choices, ease of ordering, and they offer discounted subscription services.

Decaf Medium Roast Coffee Beans

We recommend using medium roast coffee beans for your decaffeinated drip coffee. It will give your drip coffee the best flavor and texture. Equator Coffees has excellent options for medium roast as well, both decaf and caffeinated.

APPLIANCES

Espresso Machine– we recommend the Breville Barista Express. It is easy to use, comes with a built-in steamer/frother and grinder, many settings options, and is an affordable espresso machine option.

Drip Coffee Machine– we recommend the Breville BDC400BSS Precision Brewer. It is an automatic coffee machine that is easy to use and comes with customizable settings options.

Coffee Grinder- if your espresso machine does not have this built-in, you can find many affordable coffee grinder options here.

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING A Lazy EYE COFFEE

  1. Grind coffee: finely grind 18 grams of dark roast coffee for a double shot of espresso. Simultaneously, medium-coarsely grind about 13 grams of decaf medium roast coffee for an 8oz cup of drip coffee.
  2. Brew drip coffee: place the medium coarse coffee grinds into drip coffee machine brewing basket over the coffee filter and start the brewing process.
  3. Tamp espresso ground coffee: if your espresso machine does not come with a built-in grinder, add the coffee grinds into the portafilter. Use the tamper to press the coffee grinds evenly and firmly, until it is tightly compressed.
  4. Pulling the espresso shots: as the drip coffee brewing cycles finishes up, insert the portafilter into the espresso machine, and hit the double shot button. Making the extraction normally takes about 25-30 seconds to pull the double 30-milliliter shots.
  5. Combine the coffees: pour your decaf black coffee into your coffee mug. Add the double shot of espresso on top.
  6. Enjoy: drink delicious coffee without worrying about having too much caffeine!

If this is not enough caffeine- give the original black eye coffee a try!

If however, you do not like the taste of the lazy eye coffee, give the favored americano a try instead. Same amount of caffeine, yet less bitter, less concentrated flavor!
