Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Rich and decadent: There’s nothing better than a cup of creamy homemade hot chocolate when it’s cold outside. A cup of heaven! This homemade Mexican hot chocolate will always beat any store-bought hot chocolate mix.
  • Easy to make: Making a cup of homemade hot chocolate is so easy that you’ll probably never want to drink those watery hot chocolate mixes. Using ingredients you already have on hand, you can whip up it up in less than 10 minutes!
  • Uses pantry ingredients: This recipe is incredibly easy to make and you can find all the ingredients already in your kitchen.

What You Need to Make Mexican Hot Chocolate

  • Cocoa powder: You can use dutch processed or natural unsweetened cocoa powder for this recipe.
  • Chocolate: I suggest using a high-quality bittersweet or semisweet chocolate bar.
  • Milk: Whole milk gives the creamiest results. I don’t recommend skimmed or low-fat milk.
  • Sugar: I use granulated sugar to make hot chocolate.
  • Ground cinnamon: A pinch of ground cinnamon adds a warming spicy note to the Mexican hot chocolate.
  • Vanilla extract: Vanilla extract adds flavor and taste.
  • Cayenne or chili powder: Try adding a pinch of cayenne or chili powder for a little kick.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Finely chop the chocolate into small pieces.
  • In a medium saucepan add the milk, cocoa powder, cinnamon, sugar, a pinch of chili powder, and vanilla extract.
  • Over medium heat, occasionally whisk the ingredients together until steaming.
  • Add chocolate and stir until fully melted.
  • Serve immediately, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows and chocolate shavings.
