What is Panna Cotta?

Panna Cotta is a sweet-tasting and elegant dessert made with cream, milk, sugar, and gelatin. You can make plain vanilla panna cotta or flavor the cream in any way you want. If this is your first time making Panna Cotta, we suggest starting with the classic recipe and then trying other varieties and flavors.

What You Will Need to Make Vanilla Panna Cotta

  • Heavy cream: Panna cotta means “cooked cream” in Italian.  is basically a simple mixture of cream, sugar, and vanilla.
  • Sugar: This dessert is not loaded with sugar. It has a perfectly balanced sweetness!
  • Milk: Traditionally panna cotta was made with just sweetened cream and gelatin, but in the modern recipe of this dessert, the amount of cream is reduced and a little milk is added. This makes the panna cotta lighter and healthier.
  • Gelatin: Gelatin is used to set panna cotta. For best results use high-quality gelatin that has high clarity.
  • Vanilla: You can use vanilla bean pods instead of vanilla extract. Vanilla beans give a much better flavor than extract. Just Cut the beans in half and then split each half lengthwise using a sharp knife. Scrape out the seeds to use in your recipe.
  • Fresh berries, berry syrup, or berry jello for garnish.

How to Make Vanilla Panna Cotta

  • Bloom gelatin: Add cold milk to a saucepan and sprinkle gelatin on top to bloom. Wait 5 minutes.
  • Add in sugar: Add sugar and put on low heat. Stir until the sugar and gelatin dissolve. Once the mixture is simmering, remove it from the heat and let it cools down a bit.
  • Add in cream: Whisk vanilla extract or vanilla bean seeds into the mixture. Heat gently for 2 minutes until hot but do not boil.
  • Strain the mixture: Strain the mixture to remove any lumps. Divide the mixture evenly between serving cups.
  • Refrigerate: Refrigerate for 4-6 hours.
  • Prepare strawberry jello: Prepare Jello according to package directions and set it aside to cool down. Take the cups out of the fridge with the panna cotta layer already set.
  • Add jello and fruit slices: Fill cups with jello mixture up to the edges of the cups.
  • Refrigerate: Refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight.
