Alikkathappam

Ingredients:

1 cup Plain flour
2 tbsp sugar, powdered
1 tsp black sesame seeds
a pinch of cardamom powder
water, as required
salt to taste
oil for frying

Preparation:

  1. In a bowl, add plain flour, sugar, sesame seeds, cardamom powder and salt and mix well.
  2. Add required amount of water and knead well to a soft tight dough. Keep it covered for 20 minutes.
  3. Make balls out of this dough and roll each on a lightly floured surface into very thin sheet using a rolling pin.
  4. Use a serrated metal bottle cap as shown below and cut out to get half-moon shape.

5. Heat oil in a pan and deep fry them in batches on medium-low flame till crispy and golden on both sides.
6. Remove from the oil and drain them on a paper towel.
7. Cool down to room temperature and then store in an air tight container. Enjoy as a tea time snack…

  • “Alikkath” is a type of traditional malabar earring worn by muslim women.. This snack has a similar shape of alikkath, hence the name
