Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock – Wake Up to Fresh Coffee

If one were to dream up an alarm clock — the perfect alarm clock that would make the task of waking up and getting ready for the daily grind a little easier — for many, the inclusion of Coffee would be at the top of the list.

Luckily, designer and founder of the British homeware brand JoyResolve, Josh Renouf did just that — and the result is the Barisieur, a gorgeous automatic coffee maker with a unique twist.

What Is Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

The Barisieur is an automatic coffee and tea brewer that is designed to sit atop one’s bedside table. Its intention is to gently and elegantly ease the user into the morning, getting the day started on the right track — with a tasty cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea.

While automatic coffee makers are nothing new, the Barisieur has carved itself out quite a beautiful and unique little niche, combining a lovely looking automatic coffee brewer that is designed to be housed away from a kitchen, with a digital alarm clock. Once the alarm sounds, or at an optional five minutes before or up to fifteen minutes after, the Barisieur begins its brew cycle.

The design of The Barisieur is incredibly well thought out, including both a drawer for coffee, tea, and sugar and a small refrigerated compartment to keep a 25ml dose of milk cold overnight.

Benefits of Using Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

What could be more pleasant than waking up to a cup of coffee? Many coffee enthusiasts have developed a morning ritual centered around the preparation and consumption of the gorgeous brown liquid we all know and love.

Some individuals choose the fully manual route, using one of the best pour-over coffee makers like a V60. Home espresso fans may brew espresso in a stovetop coffee maker, while others often with a focus on ease of use and capacity, go for one of the many great durable stainless steel coffee makers that are on the market.

The difference between many of these options and the Barisieur, aside from the time-saving factor, is that the Barisieur is designed to stimulate the five senses. Hear the gentle sound of bubbling and coffee brewing, see the water rising and flowing on its way toward the coffee, touch the natural timber and the tactile buttons on the device, smell the coffee as it gently brews and finally, taste the coffee once the brew is complete.

How Does Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock Work

One could think of the Barisieur as an automatic coffee maker with a delayed start timer. Because essentially, that is what the Barisieur is, only with a few important differences.

The Barisieur works by first setting the time on the digital clock, followed by setting the alarm. In the evening, before getting into bed, the user preloads the Barisieur with water in the water beaker, and coffee into the steel filter. Once the alarm sounds the following morning, the device will automatically begin brewing a pour-over style coffee.

The Barisieur is made to be used away from the kitchen, particularly for use in the bedroom, so it is fitted with everything one might need to enjoy a cup of coffee, including milk and sugar.

Pros and Cons of Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

Pros

  • Reusable mesh filter. No single-use filters being used makes the device more environmentally friendly.
  • Large showerhead. This means adequate wetting of the coffee bed, which equates to a more even extraction.
  • Looks beautiful. Matte black or white base with a natural timber top.
  • Well made and well thought out. Much attention has gone into the product, nicely designed and built to last.
  • The glass. Uses borosilicate glass, which is durable and thermal shock resistant, meaning no shattering or cracking when going from cold to hot or vice versa.

Cons

  • Small capacity brewer. Brew size for the Barisieur is 160ml, which for some, is far too small.
  • Non-airtight drawer to store coffee. Coffee needs to be stored in an airtight container to preserve freshness. The drawer included in the Barisieur is not airtight.
  • Price. One of the more expensive automatic coffee brewers on the market.
  • Clean-up. While all glass parts are dishwasher safe, there are multiple things that need to be cleaned, including the mesh coffee filter. For a fast coffee maker with low effort and little clean-up, check out two of the best K-cup coffee makers here Keurig k475 vs k575 machine for coffee.

Types of Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clocks

The Barisieur comes in two striking colorways: blond/white, and walnut/black — both of which include the same feature set. The blond and white version comes with a light, nordic style wooden top, and a bright white base, while the walnut and black version includes a rich walnut color wooden tray that sits atop a matt black base.

Features of the Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

Milk Cooler

The Barisieur includes a small refrigerated compartment to keep a 25ml single dose of milk, or the world’s best vegan coffee creamer cool, maintaining it at a temperature of between 3-5°C (37-41°F), overnight. The device uses infrared to automatically detect the presence of milk, which engages the refrigeration function.

Compact Size

Designed to sit atop an existing bedside table, the Barisieur is compact, measuring in at a touch under 30 centimeters (11 inches) both in width and in height.

Smart Induction Coil

On water heating duties, the Barisieur utilizes a smart induction coil heater, which boils the water to the perfect brewing temperature of 94°C (201°F) within three minutes. The smart induction heater also includes temperature detection and auto shut-off in its feature set.

Auto-Dim Display

The display light automatically reduces brightness at night or can be turned off completely without powering down the entire system.

Large Showerhead

A showerhead to an automatic coffee brewer is similar to a kettle for pour-over coffee. It is what decides how well the water will be dispersed over the coffee, therefore influencing how well the coffee will be extracted.

The issue with many automatic coffee makers is the showerhead. More specifically, the problem lies in the size of the showerhead, and its inability to wet the coffee grinds within the filter cone evenly.

The Barisieur is fitted with an optimally sized, large showerhead, which will make it possible for the water to touch each of the coffee grinds at a similar rate. This will allow for a more even extraction, meaning a better-tasting cup of coffee.

Built-In Storage Draw

Built into the base of the Barisieur is a small drawer with a 180g capacity, designed to house tea, coffee or sugar. While keeping everything together, including ground coffee in the drawer, is a delightful and convenient prospect, for best results, it is recommended to use the drawer for other things — sugar or even sachets of a tasty instant coffee mix as a backup. Fresh coffee oxidizes quickly, and as such, is the best ground the night before at the earliest.

Measuring Scoop

Within the metal casing of the lid of the drawer sits a 15g measuring scoop.

Solid Timber Construction

The top tray of the unit is machined out of one solid, smooth piece of timber. It comes finished in either blond or walnut colors.

Premium Glass

The glass parts of the Barisieur are hand-formed using durable borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is well known for being highly resistant to rapid temperature changes — meaning it won’t crack like regular glass can when going from cold to hot.

How to Make Coffee With Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

The Barisieur is designed so that all the preparation is done the night before— to create a ritual of getting ready for the following morning.

One of the beautiful things about this particular brewer is its simplicity. The preparation is fairly minimal and includes placing water into the water beaker, coffee into the steel mesh filter, adding milk into the refrigerated glass, and setting the alarm. The rest is taken care of by the device itself. Aside from drinking cold brew coffee, what could be easier?

Step 1 – Add water

Fill the water beaker on the left-hand side of the device, to the MAX indicator line. Fix the plug and the pipe back into the water beaker.

Step 2 – Add the coffee

The Barisieur brews a single 160ml cup of coffee. Use around 10g of coffee, which will give a brew ratio of 1:15 (coffee to water), which is perfect for all pour-over brew methods. This can either be done by using a set of scales, which will give a more accurate measurement or can be approximated using the provided scoop.

Step 3 – Add milk (if desired)

Add the desired amount of milk (up to 25ml) into the milk refrigeration unit. Be sure not to fill past the MAX indicator line.

Step 4 – Set the alarm

Set the alarm. If desired, one can set the brew cycle to begin either five minutes prior or up to fifteen minutes after the alarm.

Step 4 – Wake up

Wake up to the sound of the alarm and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Enjoy.

Do’s and Don’ts With Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock

  • Do use fresh coffee. Preground coffee tastes flat and lacks aromatics. Grind the coffee fresh the night before.
  • Do keep the Barisieur clean.
  • Don’t fill any of the beakers with liquid above the MAX indicator line.

Conclusion

The Barisieur is a beautifully designed and well thought out coffee brewer. It includes everything needed to brew delicious coffee— not just at home but on a bedside table or in one’s living room. It comes in two gorgeous colorways, is simple to use and will certainly provide an easy way of starting the day on the right foot.
