    • Third, you will extend the life of your clothes and sheets and
    • Lastly. when sheets and your laundry dry on the line, it just about presses itself

Laundry Lessons

Washing

Pay attention to the types of detergents you buy.  Most are basically synthetic chemicals that react together to get rid of your stains and dirt on your laundry.  Use 1/4 – 1/2 of the amount the detergent maker tells you to use.  Your clothes will get just as clean. If anyone in your family has sensitive skin, all natural or organic laundry soaps are good alternatives.  Mrs. Meyers is always a winner or you might want to make your own.

The Clothes Line

Snap those sheets and hang them on your clothesline. In the summer look at the weather forecast to see when it would be best to schedule your laundry day.In the winter, mount the line perhaps in your basement near your furnace.  In England, its not uncommon to see a ceiling mounted rack found high above the Aga or stove in the kitchen.

Ironing

If you’ve ever climbed into freshly pressed cotton sheets after a long, hard day you will know that this is luxury to which you can easily become addicted. It costs absolutely nothing but a little extra time.

Try one of Rowenta’s  irons for the finishing touch on your laundry. If you fold your sheets properly right off the line they should look almost self pressed. For a finishing touch only iron the top 10″ of the sheets, the part that will be showing when you make the bed. For added luxury, press your pillowcases and shams. Use a steam iron, light starch or spray some lavender water on to give a nice scent.

Line drying is a wonderful way to dry your laundry on those lovely sunny days of summer. Your clothes will last longer, smell better and be easier to iron and keep. Are these better environmental practices? Yes. Getting back to traditional home-keeping practices are just a win win for everyone.
