Douro wins European Wine City 2023

The project “All Aroud Wine, All Around Douro” won the application “European City of Wine 2023”, awarded in Brussels within the scope of the European Network of Wine Cities (Recevin). In this candidacy process for European Wine Capital, all the municipalities that make up the Intermunicipal Douro Community - Alijó, Armamar, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Lamego, Mesão Frio, Moimenta da Beira, Murça, Penedono , Peso da Régua, Sabrosa, Santa Marta de Penaguião, São João da Pesqueira, Sernancelhe, Tabuaço, Tarouca, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Nova de Foz Côa and Vila Real. The Douro Heritage of Humanity will thus have an opportunity for greater affirmation at an international level, capable of, as José Manuel Gonçalves, mayor of Peso da Régua, said to Revista de Vinhos, “create value for the region as a whole” and generate notoriety for the tourist, heritage, gastronomic and wine offer in the region. In the presentation of the candidacy, which competed with two other national candidacies – Vale do Lima and Algarve – José Manuel Gonçalves mentioned that it was “one of the greatest collective challenges that the Douro has already taken on in its entire history”, materializing “the will of a territory that is, according to Miguel Torga, 'the most serious reality we have' in Portugal. A reality that is 'an excess of nature', built with blood, sweat and tears shed by generations of Douro people”. "With this victory, we cherish the legitimate desire that the Douro, a major contributor to national exports, makes wine and vineyards a concrete and real lever for the development of its economy and the wealth of those who live and work here", said the mayo of Peso da Régua. Consolidating “this network of cities in the Douro” and “affirming this wine-growing territory in Europe” are some of the objectives of this application, which resulted from the experience of the City of Wine 2019, a distinction awarded to the city of Régua by the AMPV, according to José Manuel Gonçalves.
