Back when I was working to pay off $45,000 of debt, I often heard about Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. The course was hailed by everyone who took it. But enrolling in the course cost money. Plus, it seemed to me that everything you learned in the class wasn’t exactly rocket science.

Pay off debt? Duh. Save money? Yeah of course. Never spend more than you earn? We’re talking Money Basics 101.

And yet thousands upon thousands of people have taken Dave Ramsey’s course and boasted about how much they learned and are now living their best financial life.

When my church decided to host the program, I decided to finally hop on board and see what everyone else had been talking about.

Motivation

My husband and I had worked hard the first five years of our marriage to pay off $45K of student loans, credit cards, and car loans. We never thought we would find ourselves back in debt just a few short years later.

But we both needed to replace our cars once we had a baby. And even though we bought used, we still didn’t have enough cash on hand to pay for both cars in cash. And just like that we found ourselves back in debt.

But it wasn’t just that. We also were paying our credit card off each month, but we often found ourselves borrowing money from the next month to pay for the current month. It was like no matter how much we tried, we simply couldn’t get ahead of our finances.

Within the first week of the Dave Ramsey course, I started to understand what others liked about the class: Motivation.

Hearing Dave Ramsey’s story, I understand that he has actually lived through the very thing he preaches. He filed for bankruptcy and had to start from the ground up. What he was saying and how he was delivering this message of financial freedom really resonates with everyone who takes the course.

I don’t want to feel chained down to my finances. I don’t want my finances to hold me back. And I don’t want to constantly feel the weight of my finances on my shoulders. Hearing Dave Ramsey talk about this makes you feel like you’re not alone, that someone else understands, and that there’s a solution to these problems.

Group Support

With the Financial Peace University program, you find yourselves working through the program with other people in a group setting. The group support really helps talk about the specific issues you face in your financial freedom journey.

Getting Back on Track

The program helps you deal with every financial aspect of managing money–it’s not just about getting out of debt. The program covers retirement, how to avoid sleazy sales tactics, why cash is king, and how to manage your children’s college savings.

This is the course that should be taught in high schools across America. Money is such a huge part of adulthood, and yet we’ve been taught by society to never discuss money. How is anyone supposed to know how to properly manage money if your parents weren’t exactly money savers to begin with?

Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is not a scam, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get on the right track of managing money.
