Try These Affordable Weekend Getaways for the Family

After being cooped up all winter, you’re probably ready to shake off the dust and start enjoying the nice weather. What better way to enjoy the new season than to take a trip with your family? Here are some of the best affordable weekend getaway options the whole Family will love.

1. Washington, DC

Though there are certainly pricey hotels in DC, you can easily find affordable accommodations outside of the downtown area and then take Metro transit into the city. Once you’re in the city, you can take advantage of free attractions including a large selection of museums and outdoor sights.

2. Fayetteville, NC

Whether you’re a military family or not, the home of Fort Bragg is a great weekend getaway destination. Here you’ll find many open attractions for families including the Airborne & Special Operations Museum as well as North Caroline Veterans Park. Most museums in this area are free admittance.

3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN

National parks are always a great option for families and if you choose to camp, you can save even more money. Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers all kinds of activities from hiking to boating as well as wildlife classes and ranger-led talks. Plus, admission is free, so you only pay if you stay overnight.

4. Cape May, NJ

If you love the beach but you want to avoid touristy beach towns, try Cape May, New Jersey. This little town is a throw-back to a family town because it has no fast food, just mom-and-pop shops. You’ll also find a beautiful beach and boardwalk plus local attractions like the Cape May County Zoo, the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, and the Cape May Lighthouse.

5. Williamsburg, Virginia

This historical town is a great place to spend the weekend with family. Accommodations are cheap and there are plenty of attractions nearby. Though some of the parks can get pricy, you can save money with combination tickets or spend most of your time just enjoying the historic town.

6. San Antonio, Texas

If you’re within driving distance, San Antonia is a great family-friendly destination that has plenty of affordable options. Check out the San Antonio River Walk for a day of free entertainment or do some window shopping at boutiques. You should also check out the Japanese Tea Garden which features koi-filled ponds, stone bridges, and (most importantly) free admittance.

7. Baltimore, Maryland

This seaport city is often overlooked but it is an affordable option with plenty to do. Home of the admission-free Baltimore Museum of Art and the Baltimore Aquarium which often has free days, there is plenty to do in this city. You can also find plenty of culture or experience a bit of history at The Bengies, one of America’s last remaining drive-ins.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get away from it all. In fact, a weekend getaway can be very affordable if you plan properly. Follow the tips provided above to start planning your next family getaway. Good luck!
