Hiding in the Shadows: 10 Little Known Scary Movies

Do you like scary movies? And do you know any scary films that aren’t quite known well enough? Well, here are ten films for you to check out, and get ready to have some goosebumps!

1. High Tension (2003)

One person commented, “Check out High Tension. It's a French film.”

A second person replied, “I've actually seen this one as well and quite liked it, but I don't exactly remember it being scary, rather a gory psychological thriller.”

Then the third added, “For some reason, it’s called Switchblade Romance over here.”

2. Noroi: The Curse (2005)

Noroi: The Curse is a Japanese horror film directed by Kōji Shiraishi, released in 2005. It's presented as a documentary-style found footage film that follows a paranormal expert investigating a series of strange occurrences connected to an ancient demon.

Known for its suspenseful storytelling and atmospheric horror, the film is regarded as one of the scarier entries in the Japanese horror genre and is praised for its slow build-up of dread rather than relying on jump scares.

3. Home Movie (2008)

Somebody commented, “I rarely ever see it mentioned. I found it years ago on some horror movie LiveJournal pages. But out of the ‘creepy kids’ horror movie genre, it scares me out the most.”

4. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Bone Tomahawk. It is kind of a western horror movie. Not supernatural horror, but scary in its own right,” one Reddit user commented.

“Great movie! Disturbing AF,” the second person replied.

5. Invisible Man (2020)

“As you probably know, it's highly subjective what you think is scary. I think I watched too many horror movies as a kid, so I never find them scary anymore. I just see similar patterns and over-used cliché stuff all the time. E.g Hereditary was a good film but nowhere near scary for me. Invisible Man (2020) was pretty tense, at least. Last movie that raised my heart rate a little at least,” somebody shared.

6. A Dark Song (2016)

One Reddit user shared, “It’s not in the running for ‘scariest' movie, but I really enjoyed A Dark Song (2016). It deserves more attention.”

7. Inside (2007)

Inside (2007) is a French horror/thriller. There's not much talking other than the first 20 minutes, so the subtitled film isn't bad,” somebody said.

8. Smile (2022)

Smile is a deeply unsettling horror film featuring Dr. Rose Cotter, a psychiatrist haunted by terrifying visions after witnessing a patient's horrifying suicide. The movie's antagonist, The Smile Entity, is a nightmarish figure known for its chilling phrase, “You can't escape your own mind, Rose.”

The film, an expansion of 2020 short “Laura Hasn't Slept,” is lauded for its high tension, graphic horror, and eerie atmosphere that distinguish it in the genre. Its intensity and unsettling content make it a difficult but gripping watch for horror fans.

9. Sinister (2012)

Sinister is a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson. The film follows true crime writer Ellison Oswalt, played by Ethan Hawke, who discovers a box of home movies in his new house that suggests the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back decades. The film is known for its atmospheric tension, disturbing imagery, and the creepy presence of a pagan deity named Bughuul. The mixture of found footage and traditional filmmaking helps create a chilling narrative that keeps viewers on edge.

10. Case 39 (2009)
