Over Your Head: 10 Movie Jokes You Totally Missed Growing Up

Have you ever watched a Movie and encountered an awkward line or two that seem like a punchline, but they just don't make sense? Well, it’s pretty common that we wouldn’t get all of the jokes, especially if we're young. Sometimes you end up looking them up, or rewatching years later before you finally get it. Here are 10 jokes from films that Redditors didn’t get for years or had to look up!

1. Blazing Saddles

One person shared, “I missed a lot of jokes from Blazing Saddles. The one that I totally missed for much longer than I should have was: ‘They said you was hung. And they was right!’ woosh!”

Another Redditor replied, “Also, Elvira: ‘How's your head?’ ‘No complaints yet.’ For years, I thought she meant no one thought she was ugly!”

2. Austin Powers

“In Austin Powers, Austin is told ‘men come first and women come second’, and he replies ‘or sometimes not at all!’ I look back and remember my mom eyeing my 12-year-old naïve a– that was laughing so hard. I didn’t get it,” someone shared.

“I used to think you were crazy, but now I can see your nuts,” replied the other, with another funny line from the movie.

3. Pokémon: The First Movie

One Reddit user commented, “In the first Pokemon movie, Ash and friends need to get to this island, but all the normal boats are gone. Cue Team Rocket, showing up with a Viking longship and in costume for god knows what reason. Ash says something like, ‘I didn't think Vikings were around anymore,’ and Brock replies, ‘They mostly live in Minnesota.’ Not being a sports fan, as a kid, I thought this just meant there was like a colony of Vikings in Minnesota. It took me like 20 years to realize it was just a Minnesota Vikings joke, lol.”

4. Mrs. Doubtfire

‘I should never buy gribenes from a Mohel. It's so chewy!’ Robin Williams is dressed as an older Jewish lady in Mrs. Doubtfire. Gribenes is an old Jewish food. It's chicken or Goose skins, and a Mohel is a dude who performs circumcisions on babies. So, there is an eating baby d-ck skin joke in Mrs. Doubtfire, and it's hilarious,” commented one user.

“That movie is so full of innuendos it’s unbelievable—I'll still catch new things every time we rewatch it. A personal favorite from a while back: ‘She's got a power tool in the bedroom, dear. It's her own personal jackhammer. She could break sidewalks with that thing.’ We laughed until blue in the face, and the kids were mildly amused, if somewhat confused,” replied another.

5. Bill and Ted

One person shared, “‘69 dudes!!’ from Bill and Ted, and I was like 7 at the time, I just thought they really liked that number for some reason.”

6. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, when Henry Senior mentions that Elsa talks in her sleep. When I was a kid, whoooosh,” someone shared.

“Learned recently that line was ad-libbed, and the crew was dying of laughter because they obviously weren't expecting it,” the second person replied.

7. Back to the Future

Somebody commented, “I'm an idiot and never got why Biff saying, ‘Make like a tree and get out of here' was wrong. I've watched Bttf countless times. Old man Biff literally spells out why it's wrong in 2 and it literally flew over my head for years. One day I was playing multiverses, and Bugs Bunny said it, and it just clicked.”

Then another replied, “That's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship.”

8. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

“‘Sue Ellen, every girl over 25 should have a cucumber in the house.’ —Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead,” someone shared.

“I'm right on top of that, Rose,” replied the second person.

“I never noticed that for years. Rewatched it at a theater a couple years ago and everyone burst out laughing,” the third added with an even more funny moment.

9. School of Rock

“In School of Rock, when Jack Black is found out by the parents and he says ‘your kids have touched me, and I am pretty sure I’ve touched them as well’ and the parents go nuts, I didn’t get that one until much later,” someone stated.

10. Scrooged

One Reddit user shared, “In Scrooged, Bill Murray pours water over a waiter because he thinks his clothes are on fire. When he realizes this isn’t the case, he says, ‘Sorry, I thought you were Richard Pryor.' Had no idea what that meant until I recently googled it, and found out it was a reference to when Richard Pryor set himself on fire while on a bender in 1980.”
