10 Best “You Shall Not Pass” Moments in Other Movies

A movie lover mentions the memorable moment in Lord of the Rings when Gandalf saves Frodo and the others by using his magic as he screams to the enemy, “you shall not pass!” The line hits hard because of everything else in the scene. Other films have those moments, sometimes with dialogue—sometimes without. Here's a breakdown of scenes in movies that rival that one.

1. Cap Does the Heavy Lifting

It's unsurprising that for many moviegoers, their moment is in Avengers: Endgame. The iconic moment where Captain America and Thor go for round two with Thanos. As Thor gets pummeled, Captain America hits Thanos with Thor's hammer.

This moment built up since Avengers: Age of Ultron when the team takes turns trying to lift Thor's hammer but only with Captain America does the hammer, which only the worthy can lift, move a smidge, much to Thor's initial dismay.

2. Ripley Smacks Down Queen Alien

Alien is incredible and one of a kind with its H.R. Giger monster creations. But Aliens surpasses that film, upping the stakes from one alien running amok to a community's worth. It's almost a literal “you shall not pass” moment as the queen alien tracks down Newt to kill her.

But before nabs Newt, Ripley steps out, strapped into a robotic contraction, and delivers the iconic phrase, “get away from her, you b-word!” This is cinema at its finest.

3. Do Sharks Smile?

Powerful moments are unforgettable, whether dialogue, action, or a mix of both. They become phrases in our lexicon. Jaws has both at its climax as Sheriff Martin Brody faces the tremendous white menace. When Brody shoots the air tank stuck in the shark's mouth, he quips, “smile, you son of a b-word!”

4. A Deadly Monologue

A fan declares that the iconic scene between two powerhouse actors, Dennis Hopper, and Christopher Walken, is why they “had to have” True Romance. Playing Clifford and Vincenzo, respectively, Vincenzo beats Clifford for information.

Knowing his death is sealed regardless, rather than providing said information, Clifford goes into an offensive spiel, “throwing gasoline on the fire” and guaranteeing a quick death. The smile and kiss Vincenzo gives Clifford, with the wait-here-a-moment look, is as priceless as the dialogue.

5. Anarchy Nurturer

The Dark Knight has plenty of moments, thanks mainly to the late Heath Ledger's knockout Joker performance. But the most powerful moment comes from Bruce's butler, Alfred. After telling Bruce a story about a man stealing precious stones only to throw them away, Bruce wonders why the man stole them in the first place. Alfred informs him that “some men just want to watch the world burn.”

6. Weapons and Christmas Spirit

The Christmas classic Die Hard mixes guns with good cheer in this thrilling scene. After Bruce Willis' John McClane kills one of the terrorists, he takes their weapon and sends a message to the rest, especially the leader Hans, played by the late and great Alan Rickman.

Hans discovers his dead member in a Santa hat and reads the phrase “now I have a machine gun, Ho-Ho-Ho” written on the deceased's shirt with equal parts annoyance and fascination.

7. Stuck in the Middle

Early Quentin Tarantino films had transfixing characters and scenes. For example, a movie commenter references the horrific moment in Reservoir Dogs when Mr. White is alone with a bound police officer. Though the officer claims he knows no “rat” working with the cops, Mr. White doesn't care.

As Mr. White turns on the radio letting Stealers Wheel's “Stuck in the Middle With You” play, he gives an impromptu dance, and the officer, and viewers, cannot look away, knowing something monstrous is in store.

8. Youse Can't Leave

A Bronx Tale is an unbelievably compelling film. The heaviest moment is when bikers enter a bar in crime boss Sonny's neighborhood. After Sonny tells the bartender to serve them some beers, the bikers spray the beers all over the bar and bartender.

Sonny politely tells them to leave, and they mistake his genteel manner for weakness. Fed up, Sonny locks the door to the bar and announces, “now youse can't leave,” and just like that, a shift occurs. How those bikers' expressions changed because they knew they messed up is priceless.

9. That Little Friend is a Cannon

Scarface is another classic film with powerhouse moments and catchy music sprinkled throughout its runtime. Even if you've never seen the movie, you've heard its iconic phrase. Near the film's end, armed men, hellbent on killing him, swarm Tony Montana's mansion.

But Tony is not going quietly. Seeing men outside his office door, Tony grabs a weapon that includes a grenade launcher, and since the men want to “play,” he bellows, “say hello to my little friend,” before exploding his door and the men on the other side.

10. This is. . .Classic!

There are too many moments that deliver magnetic impact in 300. From “you will not enjoy this” to “we'll put their name to the test.” But the strongest moment is the one that sets the tone of the film, along with their values near the opening.

After insulting Leonidas's wife, a deadly miscalculation, a visiting messenger threatens Leonidas to capitulate to Xerxes. Leonidas and the rest of the Spartans draw their swords, and after the emissary claims Leonidas's actions are “madness,” he shouts, “this is Sparta!”
