National Guardian Life Company’s History

National Guardian Life Company was founded in 1909 and was called The Wisconsin State Life Insurance Company then in Madison, WI. A year later the company sold their first life insurance policy for $5,000. In 1918 the business was growing more and more and it was time to move into a larger space, they moved into the Bank of Wisconsin Building. In 1920 they word “National” was added to the company name when Germania Life Insurance Company became the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in 1918. In 1936, the company transitioned from a stock company to a mutual company upon their agreement of the Board of Directors. By 1948, the company has $100 million of insurance in force and they celebrated their milestone with 250 guests at the Loraine Hotel where awards and prizes were given out to outstanding members for service, production, and other achievements. In 1959 the new audiovisual “sales kits” were being used by agents which was the cutting-edge technology that was implemented to help increase their sales.

The company created their new logo in 1965 to show their policyholders as a leaf of the three leaf tree, marketing partners as the other leaf, company agents community as the last leaf, their strong protective shell created by employees, and the root being their financial stability and excellent customer service. In 1999 the company purchased Settlers Life Insurance Company adding more than 350,000 policies and certificates and with this transaction NGL consolidated statutory assets of $1 billion and policyholder surplus of $100 million. By 2004, their sales of life insurance products as measured by premium set a record of $120 million and by 2008 their assets exceeded $2 billion and surplussed nearly $161 million. Their policyholders exceeded 820,000. Two years later NGL celebrated their 100th anniversary by donating $100,000 to Madison College which afterwards created scholarships to Madison College. In 2011, NGL reached 1 million policyholders and four years later they acquired the individual life and annuity business of Madison National Life Insurance Company and annuities totaling approximately $260 million of reserves represented 280,000 policyholders.

National Guardian Life’s Community Involvement

Just like many other big box life insurance companies, National Guardian Life also takes pride in their community involvement. On their website, they state that their focus is about people – from their policyholders and marketing partners to their employees and the communities in which they live and work. Their generous employees give their time and their money to support causes that are most important to them. Many of their employee volunteer efforts go above and beyond and this month NGL is proud to feature their 35 NGL employees who volunteer for Home Health United Meals on Wheels. NGL and their employees have participated in the program for more than 30 years which equals out to 31,000+ meals delivered throughout the years. The gifts that employees donate to an eligible nonprofit of their choice has the opportunity of doubling their impact of their gift through NGL’s Matching Gift Program. Last year, the Salvation Army of Dane County raised more than $500,000 through the Red Kettle Campaign.

National Guardian Life Insurance Company 2017 Review

For over 100 years National Guardian Life Insurance Company has provided excellent customer service. They believe that excellent customer service is key to success and if something is important to one of their policy owners, marketing partners or agents, it’s important to them. NGL’s consolidated assets continue to grow and now exceed $2.5 billion which is an increase of 126% over the last 10 years. On their website, they advertise their final expense insurance, group term life insurance, and long-term-care insurance. According to A.M Best Company, they have rated them an “A-“ or excellent. Why you should always read a company’s rating.

Ratings are important for consumers to know because it gives them a good idea of their financial stability. It’s good for you, the consumer, to know whether a company is financially stable or not because you want to make sure the company will be around long enough for your policy to pay out. Ratings are not made up for jokes and giggles, there is a process these rating agencies go through to develop their rating. The company has to first seek out the help of the rating agency they choose to work with and sign a contract with them in order to allow them to go through the company’s financials and plans. Once the rating agency thoroughly investigates the company’s financials and plans then they present the recommended rating to their board and vote on whether or not the rating is a fair rating for the company to receive. After the vote then the rating is posted on the agency’s website and sent to the company.

If a company has a good rating it means that they are financially stable and if anything happens to their environment they would be perfectly fine. However, if a company has a bad rating it not only shows their instability with their financials but it also means they are vulnerable in their environment so if anything were to happen in their environment they wouldn’t know how to react. Plus they may not even be around in another 5 years or so and you don’t want to invest into a company that would just pick up and leave because not only will your policy be gone with the wind but so will all the premiums you have paid until that day. Moral of all this, just take a couple minutes of your day and check out a company’s rating.
