Nina Kamenova Dobreva, known professionally as Nina Dobrev (/dobrv/ DOH-brev), is a Canadian actress. Nina Kamenova Dobreva was born in Bulgaria on January 9, 1989. She gained fame for her roles as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in The Vampire Diaries on The CW from 2009 to 2015.

Dobrev, who was raised in Toronto but was born in Sofia, made her film debut in bit parts before getting the lead role of Mia Jones in the drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2006–2009). Nina Kamenova Dobreva was born on January 9, 1989, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to Michaela Dobreva (née Radeva), an artist, and computer specialist Kamen Dobrev. She has a sibling that is older. Her family moved to Canada when she was two years old, where she was reared in Scarborough, Toronto. She returned to Bulgaria with her mother for two years when she was ten years old.

Dobrev started taking ballet and jazz classes and participated in rhythmic gymnastics competitions while attending J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School and Vradenburg Junior Public School. In Toronto, she studied acting at Armstrong Acting Studios. The next year, Dobrev graduated from the arts program at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough.

Dobrev plays the character Mia for three seasons of the teen drama television series Degrassi: The Next Generation beginning in 2006. In the middle of the 2000s, she made multiple appearances in big-budget movies, such as Away from Her (2007) and Fugitive Pieces (2007). Dobrev also starred in a number of television movies, including two Lifetime original movies as well as the 2008 Sci Fi Channel film Never Cry Werewolf and the 2008 MTV film The American Mall.

Dobrev departed Degrassi in 2009 to portray the title character of Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries, a supernatural drama series on The CW that is based on the same-named book series.
