American fashion designer Cynthia Rowley was born on July 29, 1958, and she currently calls Manhattan, New York City, home.

Rowley is a native of Barrington, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago in the northwest. She is one of Ed Rowley’s three children, who was a former science teacher, and his wife Clementine, a painter. At the age of seven, Rowley made her first dress. Her grandparents included a painter and the person who created the Pabst Blue Ribbon trademark. After graduating from Barrington High School, she went on to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1988. Rowley’s usage of wings in her design resulted in her expulsion from SAIC’s junior year art show. Rowley said that Marshall Field’s purchased her first collection while she was still a SAIC student in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

Rowley won a SAIC fellowship in her final year of high school in 1981, and she moved to New York City with the money she received. After receiving $3,000 in start-up funds from one of her grandmothers, she began her career.

Since 1988, when Rowley debuted her first capsule collection, she has expanded her line to include women’s clothing, handbags, glasses, color cosmetics, fragrance, wetsuits and swimwear, home furnishings, bedding products, and office accessories.

The designer also developed the Swell home accessory collection, which debuted at Target in 2003 and was based on a book series she co-wrote with her friend Ilene Rosenzweig. Rowley unveiled the Mr. Powers collection in 2011, a constrained menswear line bearing her husband Bill Powers’ name.
