Another Record-setting Prime Day

Once again, Amazon’s Prime Day brought shoppers out (well, online) in droves, with members purchasing more than 100 million products and generating estimated revenue of more than $4 billion.

Those numbers might be even more impressive when you take into consideration that the Amazon website struggled under the load of visitors early in the event. Many people experienced glitches when they first tried to search for deals or buy items. Evidently, they kept trying — perhaps the error pages featuring fun photos of the “dogs of Amazon” alleviated some of the frustration.

According to Amazon, small and midsize businesses were among the biggest beneficiaries of Prime Day. Those companies did sales of well over $1 billion, the company noted, and another report states third-party marketplace sales were up almost 90 percent during the first 12 hours.

Some other interesting facts from Prime Day:

  • More people joined Amazon Prime this July 16 than on any other day in history.
  • Shoppers from 17 different countries participated in the event.
  • Several categories saw more than 5 million items sold, including toys, PCs/computer accessories, apparel, and kitchen products.
  • Customers were definitely impressed with Amazon’s deal on an Instant Pot — collectively, they purchased more than 300,000.

In a news release, the company also highlighted several marketplace sellers who said sales were up 300 to 400 percent over a typical day, with one business owner saying 10 times the typical number of Items Sold.
