New To FBA? This Checklist Can Help You Get Going.

The number of Sellers on Amazon continues to grow — one estimate last year put the figure at more than 5 million — and although the company doesn’t disclose how many of those sellers utilize Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) services, it’s likely that category is growing as well.

Thinking about taking the plunge into the FBA world? First, take a look at our post about how to determine whether FBA is right for you. Then, before you start selling, check off the items on our list below. These useful tips, from business experts and sellers with real-world experience, can help you save time, frustration, and maybe even money.

  1. Go back to school — at Amazon Seller University.
This is a vital resource for learning all about selling on Amazon; it features details on tools and policies, products and services, and everything else you’ll need to know to start off on the right track. A seller account is required to gain access, but if you don’t want to sign up for a paid plan as a professional seller right away, you can register for an individual seller plan for free and upgrade later. (And check out the Amazon Seller Education YouTube channel, too.)

  2. Choose your product (or products) wisely.
Many sellers recommend starting with a product you know and understand well, but there’s a lot more to selling on Amazon than just picking a product and creating a listing. First, you want to “validate” your product — that is, reduce your risk by researching the product’s market demand. (The websites of veteran FBA sellers, like Scott of The Amazing Seller, can help you with validation techniques.) Before you buy inventory, you’ll also want to find out if the manufacturer and Amazon have any restrictions on selling. Also, check pricing trends on sites such as CamelCamelCamel to determine a competitive price that allows you to make a profit.

  3. Set up your business.
For help structuring and registering your business, including securing the appropriate permits for your city and state, talk to a CPA. They’ll also make sure you know how to stay on top of your tax obligations. (Avalara TrustFile has a Sales Tax Guide for Amazon FBA Sellers you can check out for more information.) If you’re designing your own products or planning to register trademarks, consider meeting with an attorney who handles intellectual property issues.

  4. Evaluate more than one supplier.
If multiple suppliers manufacture or provide the products you want to sell, research several of them — you don’t have to go with the first one you meet. Check reviews and testimonials, and try to get the best, most secure deal possible.

  5. Create a solid financial foundation.
It’s important to plan your budget for inventory — and be sure to account for the fees Amazon charges, any supplies you need, etc. (The Amazon Help Center has information on labeling and packaging requirements.) Maintaining an emergency fund also is a good idea; it will provide you with flexibility for unusual situations, unforeseen expenses, or even unique opportunities.

  6. Create great listings and market them.
“You have to put in the work to get your listing not just right, but perfect,” according to a blog post (with listing tips) from inventory-management software provider Skubana. And to stand out, you need to do more than just wait for people to find you. Pay-per-click campaigns are a popular tactic for FBA sellers; this PPC for FBA guide on Jungle Scout can help you get started. Other options include marketing on social media, sending targeted emails, etc.

  7. Remember, there’s always more to learn.
Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, the FBA space can change, consumer preferences can shift, the economy can turn. Seek updates and information regularly, both for Amazon and your specific markets, so you’ll be ready for whatever comes — and ready to adapt to keep your business strong.
