Bank holiday on May 1: May 1 is celebrated as Labour Day or International Workers’ Day and banks in several countries including India mostly Remain Closed on this day. However, there is yet another relevance of this date for the Indian state of Maharashtra as May 1 is celebrated as Maharashtra Day and thus the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bank holiday calendar has declared May 1 as a bank holiday in Maharashtra.

Today (Wednesday), in addition to Maharashtra, banks will remain closed in 11 states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Manipur, Kerala, Bengal, Goa, and Bihar.

Is Maharashtra Day a Public Holiday?

Maharashtra Day is declared a public holiday in the state’s 2024 government holiday list. Thus, schools and government offices will remain closed in Maharashtra today.

Cities where banks will remain closed on May 1:

According to the RBI holiday calendar list, banks will remain closed in different Indian cities including Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Panaji, Nagpur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Imphal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Belapur for Maharashtra Din/Labour Day. 

One must note that even on bank holidays people can conduct their routine financial transactions and make payments online via net banking as online banking services will continue to operate as normal. 

Bank Holiday List For May 2024:

Both private and public sector banks in India will remain closed for as many as 10 days across different Indian cities in May on account of regional holidays and regular bank holidays. Notably, Banks in India remain closed on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

• May 18– Sunday
• May 23– Banks across different cities will remain closed due to Buddha Purnima
