What Is Kizomba?

Kimbundu is a language that is mainly spoken in Angola. Kizomba is a dance genre from the Kimbundu word that means “party.” The kizomba dance genre originated in Angola and was created in the mid-1970s. It was made famous by Eduardo Paim, who is known as the ‘developer’/’father’ of kizomba dance. It came about as a fusion of several communities in Angola; kipalanga, Angolan merengue, and maybe even semba. The kizomba dance genre is done to kizomba music.

Related Dances

Kizomba also refers to a bash, or rather a celebration. Many other dances are related to the Kizomba, like bachata, cha-cha-cha, salsa, B-zouk, Afro Cuban, heels, men’s styling, twerk, hip hop, and samba. Each of these dances are taught at San Tropez.

How to Dance Kizomba

This kind of dance is characterized by urban kizomba slow body movements that primarily engage the hands and feet to the rhythm of kizomba music. It is always considered a couple-like dance where the man leads and directs the lady’s activities. The two dancers should be close together. First, the leader pushes their weight lightly between their feet, following the kizomba song’s second beat. The man is usually the leader here, whereas the lady is the follower. The dance entails a twist of the hips, accompanied by slow steps; it doesn’t require aggression and is relaxed and fun.

Kizomba Steps

Kizomba dance has several basic steps, each timed to the kizomba music. For the success of the kizomba dance, there should be good coordination between the trainer and the student.

Step 1

The first essential step to dancing kizomba with kizomba songs is a movement with two steps from one side to another. It starts with the instructor on the right and the student on the left foot. The instructor steps on one side with the left, then the right to the left foot. Then follows the exact step by moving the right foot to the other, sidetracked by the foot. The student follows what the instructor does.

Step 2

The kizomba instructor begins by moving the left foot forward and then putting all the weight on the step forward or in the same place with the right foot. Followed by backward movement by the left and then the right foot. The forward motion is repeated but in a different direction. The student follows with the opposite foot, which, in this case, begins with the stepping forward with the right foot and mirrors the instructor’s steps. The learners should be aware of the timing of each pattern.

Step 3

Similar to step 2 on the dance floor but inclusive of the Cha-cha-cha movement in the 3rd, 4th, and the 6th step.

Step 4

The most straightforward step of all includes measures to Left-Right, in repetition. It can be combined with steps 2 and 3. The learner mirrors what the instructor does. The complex steps of kizomba put in writing can be challenging to follow. Still, with an instructor, one can master these simple steps from traditional kizomba dance.
