Baghdad sent KRG $384 million to pay salaries' KRG says this amount does not cover all salaries 9/10/23

KDP said in a statement commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the September Revolution that understanding, peace, and coexistence are the only paths to prosperity and progress.

According to the statement, the party regrets the agreements signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi Federal Government led by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.

Rather than honoring the terms of the Kurdistan Region accords, the federal government has betrayed and excluded the Kurdish people, which has caused deep instability and crises, according to the KDP statement.

Furthermore, the statement pointed out that the post-2003 Iraqi regime turned away from the Iraqi constitution and exacerbated the country's deteriorating conditions.

Iraq's Council of Ministers decided on Sept. 3 to send 500 billion Iraqi dinars (over $384 million) to the Kurdistan Region as loans to cover salaries; however, Peshawa Hawramani, the KRG's spokesperson, said at a press conference on Monday that the federal government made the decision unilaterally without consulting the KRG.

On Sept. 4, KRG Finance Minister Awat Noori said that the amount of money the federal government is sending, with 320 billion Iraqi dinars in domestic revenue, is insufficient to cover all salaries.

The courts on Sept. 3, decided to stop the implementation of the Iraqi Prime Minister’s decision to hand over the current Iraqi Joint Operations Command center to the KDP, which used to conduct its political affairs inside the building before Iranian-backed Shiite militias and the Iraqi military seized control of the city in 2017.

As a protest against Iraqi military rule in Kirkuk, members of the Shiite militia forces staged a sit-in in front of the KDP's headquarters for over a week before the court reached a decision. They demanded that the building not be returned to the ruling Kurdish party, which has ceased all operations.

Kurdish protesters, affected by the closure of the Erbil-Kirkuk main road for several days, protested on Saturday afternoon on the city's popular Raheemawa street, but Iraqi security forces violently reacted. Four Kurdish protesters were killed, and 14 others were wounded.

The protests ended when militia members reopened the main road, which had been closed due to protests.

Kurdish parties won the majority of seats in the Kirkuk provincial council in the last election, prompting the militias' protest.

According to the KRG spokesperson, Masrour Barzani ordered the KRG Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs to register the dead protestors in Kirkuk as "martyrs" and provide medical assistance to the wounded.
