A 2016 attack on a shopping area killed 323 people, making it one of the deadliest attacks to hit Iraq.

 Although the explosion killed a limited number of people, it started a fire that trapped many of them.

The Iraqi government has executed three people who were convicted in a bombing case that killed hundreds of people in 2016 involving the ISIL (ISIS) armed group.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's office said on Monday that hangings took place on Sunday night and Monday morning but did not name those executed or provide details about their sentences.

Baghdad's Karrada shopping area was filled with people in advance of Eid al-Fitr, which is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, when the attack occurred early on July 3, 2016.

Officials said it caused flames that spread and trapped people inside shopping centers without emergency exits.

After the fire was put out, 323 people died, making it one of the deadliest attacks to hit Iraq and the world since September 11, 2001.

In the aftermath of the bombing, police Major-General Talib Khalil Rahi said the bomber's minibus had been loaded with plastic explosives and ammonium nitrate. Some of the dead were not able to be identified because of the raging fires.

The blast led to the resignation of Interior Minister Mohammed Ghabban.

Al-Sudani’s office said in its statement that the prime minister met with the victims’ families following the hangings and informed them that the death sentence was carried out against three key criminals found guilty of their involvement in the terrorist bombing.

ISIL overran large territories north and west of Baghdad in 2014 due to instability in Iraq.

After Iraqi forces reclaimed significant territory from ISIL, the bombing was seen as ISIL targeting civilians in response.
