About Harlan J Berk Ltd
Ancient coins and tiny artifacts were mostly offered through mail order at the initial location, which was in Joliet, Illinois. When Harlan was offered the historic coin location at 31 N. Clark Street in the center of the financial district in 1989, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Like many numismatists of the day, Harlan J. Berk began his career as a student. A few Indian Head pennies and a Swedish medal from 1818 that were preserved in her dresser’s crimson tea tin were gifts from his grandmother to him in 1949.
A few years later, in the weekly 35-cent stipend his father sent him, he discovered a 1916-D dime. In the 1954 Whitman Blue Book, which he studied, it was valued at $12.50. When he was 22 and fresh out of college, Norman Stack, a childhood buddy, hired him to work as the currency specialist in the Carson Pirie Scott lease department.
With the help of his three children, Aaron, Shanna, and Sammy, Berk launched his business in the latter part of 1964. He also serves as president and a co-owner of Gemini, LLC, a numismatic auction house.
Since joining the Professional Numismatist Guild in 1971, Harlan has served in every office, including that of president.
