According to historical domain registration data, Satoshi Nakamoto almost named Bitcoin as Netcoin. Bitcoin.org, the website associated with the first Bitcoin, which was registered on August 18, 2008, might have been entitled Netcoin.org.

Netcoin.org was recorded a day before Bitcoin.org

According to Or Weinberger, Netcoin.org was recorded on August 17, 2008, a day before Bitcoin.org.

The two domains were purchased through AnonymousSpeech, a Japanese service that allowed consumers to buy domain names anonymously. Further investigation revealed that no material was published on the Netcoin.org domain before another user repurchased it.

The discovery further distances Bitcoin from others who have previously claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto. Furthermore, the domain Netcoin.org was removed before being acquired by a subsidiary of Web.com in 2010.

In 2015, Australian computer scientist Craig Wright claimed to be Satoshi, citing early versions of Nakamoto’s 2008 paper introducing the concept as evidence. KPMG, a digital forensics firm, discovered significant inconsistencies in Wright’s allegations. It contains a 2008 date on a document indicating that Wright investigated “Nakamoto” before the whitepaper’s release. However, it was discovered that this had been tampered with.

Because many crypto community members expressed displeasure with the term Netcoin, the choice to remain with Bitcoin may have been critical to its success.
