Australia Most popular cars in 2022

2022 is done and dusted and the top-selling car stats are in. Although the supply of new cars was disrupted due to COVID supply chain disruptions and the global shortage of semiconductors, more than 1,000,000 new cars were sold in Australia last year.

Read on to find out which makes and models were the most popular for Australian new car buyers in 2022.

The top 10 car models

The top 10 new cars in terms of sales volume in Australia last year were:

  1. Toyota Hilux
  2. Ford Ranger
  3. Toyota RAV 4
  4. Mitsubishi Triton
  5. Mazda CX-5
  6. Toyota Corolla
  7. Toyota LandCruiser
  8. Isuzu Ute D-Max
  9. MG ZS

As you can see, Australians love SUVs and utes, despite rising petrol and diesel prices! SUVs and utes fill 8 of the top 10 spots and accounted for more than three-quarters (76.8%) of all new Vehicle sales in Australia in 2022.

Let’s take a look at each of the top 10 selling cars in a bit more detail.

1. Toyota HiLux

More than 64,000 HiLuxes were sold in Australia in 2022, making it the clear market leader. Incredibly, it’s the seventh year in a row that it has topped Australian new Car Sales. There are a range of new HiLux models currently priced from 24,225 to $70,220.

2. Ford Ranger

Nearly 48,000 Ford Rangers were sold in Australia in 2022, making it a clear second behind the HiLux. A range of new Ford Ranger models are available and currently priced from $35,930 to $85,490.

4. Mitsubishi Triton

The Mitsubishi Triton just pipped the Mazda CX-5 for fourth spot, recording 27,436 new sales in Australia. It’s currently priced between $29,500 and $67,990.

5. Mazda CX-5

Just over 27,000 Mazda CX-5s were sold in Australia in 2022, with current prices ranging from $35,390 to $54,380.

6. Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla was the last vehicle to top Australia’s annual new car sales list in 2016 before the HiLux started its 7-year run. It finished in sixth spot in 2022 with just over 25,000 new sales. You can currently get a new Toyota Corolla for between $28,130 and $39,120.

7. Toyota LandCruiser

The LandCruiser is still a very popular vehicle in Australia, with just under 25,000 new sales in 2022 despite its hefty price tag. The base model currently starts at $89,181 and the top of the range is $137,981.

8. Isuzu Ute D-Max

The D-Max recorded just over 24,000 new Australian sales last year, and you can currently pick one up for between $30,990 and $86,745.

9. MG ZS

The Chinese-produced MG ZS is proving to be a popular and affordable new vehicle for price and fuel-conscious Australian buyers. More than 22,000 were sold in 2022.You can currently pick one up for just $21,990 driveaway.

10. Hyundai i30

The Hyundai i30 snuck into the Australian new car sales top 10 in the final spot with just over 21,000 sales in 2022. It’s currently priced between $23,720 and $56,200.

The top 10 car brands

The top 10 car-selling brands in Australia in 2022 were:
  1. Toyota (by a country mile given that it has 4 models in the top 10 selling cars and no other manufacturer has more than 1).
  2. Mazda
  3. Kia
  4. Mitsubishi
  5. Hyundai
  6. Ford
  7. MG
  8. Subaru
  9. Isuzu
  10. Volkswagen.
Toyota had 21.4% of all new car sales in Australia in 2022, which is nearly two and a half times the number of its nearest rival (Mazda).

How many Australians are buying electric vehicles (EVs)?

EV sales are still only a very small part of the market with just over 3% of all new vehicle sales in Australia in 2022 (just over 33,000). Hybrid and hybrid electric vehicles accounted for just under 8% of all sales (just over 87,000).

More than half of all vehicles sold last year in Australia (53%, or just over 550,000) were petrol vehicles and a further 35% (just over 361,000) were diesel.

One of the challenges EV manufacturers face with the Australian market is overcoming the distances Australians tend to drive and our current love affair with utes. Only one electric ute model is currently available in Australia (the LDV T60) and it’s priced at around $90,000. It also has a limited power range in terms of the distance it can cover as well as limited towing ability.

At this stage, EV passenger vehicles are a more realistic option for environmental and fuel price-conscious buyers. However, this situation is likely to change over the next decade as the capabilities of EVs improve and their prices come down.

One factor that may help with EV pricing is government subsidies and incentives to speed up the transition to more environmentally friendly vehicles, such as purchase rebates and discounts on stamp duty and registration. Some Australian States and Territories are already offering a range of incentives, including Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
