Performance Of Government Agencies In The Fight Against Corruption
The government Agencies enumerated above have not done so well in the fight against Corruption. The reasons for their low performance include:
1. Lack Of Political Will: The government that sets up the agencies lacks the political will to fight corruption. Often they do selective fight against corrupt persons. The government usually shows indifference to corrupt practices by political associates or persons who serve their interests.
2. Witch Hunt Of Political Rivals: The agencies have been used to witch hunt those considered to be enemies of government and the members of opposition to the party in power. This destroys the intergrity of the anti graft agencies.
3. Bribery And Corruption: The very evils which the agencies are set up to fight are the factors hindering their performance. Powerful and corrupt members of the society bribe their ways and get away with their loots and misconducts.
4. Legal Obstacles hinder the prosecution of corrupt persons. Too many legal obstacles delay prosecution of corrupt persons. Also, the immunity which the constitution grants certain public office holders like the Governors and the President is a set back to the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Ways Of Improving Current Efforts At Preventing Corruption
1. Leadership: The problem of corruption in Nigeria is hinged on leadership. Citizens must be careful on the type of leaders they elect into office. We need leaders who are selfless and patriotic; leaders who can show good example. Once we get the right leaders, things would change for the better.
2. Moral Education/Foundation: This should begin with the schools. The inculcation of good morals from the primary to the tertiary (higher institutions) conscious sensitization of the citizens on what destroys progress and development in the society, would make the difference. Our religious institutions, Christains and Muslem leaders would do much in this regard.
3. National Orientation: There is need for a new national orientation which would be effective to redirect the mentality of the citizens towrds public goods and property. The orientation content and package should be ideological, some sort of national doctrine against corruption and abuse of office.
4. Strong Legal Institutions: Our legal institutions should be strengthened to cope with corruption related issues.
5. Strenthening The Anti Corruption Agencies: The EFCC, the ICPC, the Code of Conduct Bureau should be strengthened through adequate funding and independence from political or executive interference.
6. Enforcement and Implementation of Civil Service Rules.
7.Meritocracy: This is the principle of merit as a basis for employment and promotion of civil servants.
