Conjunction originates from a Latin word that means joined. A conjunction joins sentences, phrases, or words together.
Types of Conjunctions
- Coordinating Conjunction
They are the conjunctions that connect words, phrases, or even two simple sentences. They are also known as co-coordinators. There are three primary coordinators. They are: ‘and “but,” and “or.”

- Subordinating Conjunctions
They connect subordinating clauses and the main clauses of complex sentences. Subordinating conjunctions create subordinate clauses similar to adverbial phrases.
Examples:
Before, during, or because, however, in the event, when is, right now, even but, to begin, when you can, as soon as, unless, etc.
He was a hard worker because he earned a good salary.
They were done before we realized that we had made an error.
The students stood immediately after the teacher arrived.
They left the site when it was still light.
Mrs. Adams arrived when her children were crying.
- Correlative Conjunctions
These conjunctions are used in pairs, one being to the other. Examples of correlative terms include: either…or, neither…nor, hardly…when you are not sooner…than, such…that, so…as it is not only…but as well, although…yet, scarcely…when, other…than the other, etc.
Examples:
The pair of Olu or Ope is around.
Both John and Peter will attend the meeting and participate in the discussion.
We had barely settled down before the rain began to pour in.
- Compound Conjunctions
They are a group of words used in conjunctions. E.g., to make sure that, regardless of the fact you want to, it’s possible to do that, as far as, or as in the earliest possible time the word “as if” is used.
Examples:
He was interested in a job in the hope of being able to help his father.
Bukola and her friend are beautiful.
