Yonder Credit Card Announces Travel Insurance Partnership

At the end of March, we reported on a new Credit card that wants to do things differently, both in terms of how it offers rewards as well as how it processes applications.

Today, Yonder has announced another new perk for its members in a move to take on recent challengers like Revolut, Curve, and Monzo, as well as more established brands American Express.

People are flocking back to foreign travel right now – just one reason why the airline industry is in chaos – but while Covid restrictions have largely been lifted it still presents a real headache for travellers who may suddenly find they are unable to travel. With all the baggage issues and cancelled flights in the headlines too, good Travel Insurance when you’re heading for sunnier climes is a must.

Yonder has been beta testing its Travel Insurance Partnership with AXA  for the last few weeks and today launched the package for all its customers “at a time when they need it most”.

Not all travel insurance is equal, especially when it comes to packaged deals such as those that come with credit cards, but perhaps one of the most important aspects of Yonder’s policy is that it covers Covid, both prior to departure and at the destination. It also covers missed flights as well as delayed or cancelled departures and UK holidays over 100km from home.

The Covid cover is what truly sets Yonder apart from its main rivals (Curve, Monzo, Revolut, Amex), as none of their policies specifically mention the virus.

Tim Chong, Yonder’s CEO, said: “Credit card insurance policies can be fraught with loopholes that catch consumers out in their moments of need.

“Insurance is one of the core benefits of a lifestyle credit card, but the credit industry is shockingly outdated. Just as it’s harder than ever to spend rewards points on something you actually want, policy coverage has also fallen behind the times.”

The travel insurance is included in the price of Yonder membership (£15 per month) and has been valued at £175 for the year.

The hope is that a strong insurance package will strengthen the lender’s position in the lifestyle credit card market and tempt people to ditch their existing cards with established companies in favour of the open-banking newcomer.

“We’re determined to rebuild consumers’ relationship with credit, and show that Yonder is a company they can trust,” Chong added.

“Together with AXA, we’ve built a travel insurance policy around our members’ needs, so they can hit the road with peace of mind.”

One more benefit for cardholders is that the policy comes with no excess, compared to lenders such as Monzo, Curve, and Amex which are all £50. The policy also covers winter sports up to £500. Of the credit card newcomers, Monzo is the only other to offer such cover, albeit to a higher value of £750.

In other aspects the card’s policy is pretty much on par with its rivals, with some areas slightly better (personal money), some not as good (baggage delays, medical expenses up to £1m compared to £10m from Monzo and Revolut), and others completely level (departure delays, personal belongings, luggage).

If you’re trying to choose a credit card, the perks and rewards should come fairly low down the list after things like fees, charges, and APRs, but if you travel a lot, are worried about Covid, or enjoy winter sports, the offering from Yonder could well be worth a look.

The lack of excess doesn’t hurt either.
