If there's any cinematic genre that I'm partial to, it's the coveted Thriller. Whether sci-fi, psychological, adventure, or horror, the thriller subgenre always delivers a gripping story with compelling characters, a spooky atmosphere, and intelligent writing. These are the best 20 thrillers to come out of the last decade.

1 – The Night House (2020)

In The Night House, a widow named Beth unravels the mystery behind her husband's disturbing secrets after his unexpected death. This psychological thriller expertly combines supernatural elements with an exploration of grief and self-discovery, keeping viewers guessing until the very end. With its atmospheric tension and mesmerizing performance by Rebecca Hall, The Night House stands out as one of the best thrillers for its ability to constantly keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

2 – Prisoners (2013)

Prisoners follows the harrowing journey of a desperate father, Keller Dover, whose daughter goes missing along with her friend. As the investigation stalls, Keller takes matters into his own hands, pushing the boundaries of morality to uncover the truth.

I went into this movie with low expectations, and it pleasantly surprised me. It's one of the most underrated hidden gems of the thriller genre in the past ten years.

A woman named Michelle wakes up in an underground bunker after a car accident, only to discover that her captor, Howard, claims the outside world has been affected by a catastrophic event. As tension and paranoia escalate, Michelle must unravel the truth about Howard and the situation outside.

10 Cloverfield Lane, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, excels at building suspense within the confined space of the bunker. Its tight storytelling, brilliant performances, and unexpected twists make it a gripping and claustrophobic thriller.

5 – Sicario (2015)

In Sicario, an idealistic FBI agent, Kate Macer, is enlisted in a joint task force to combat drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border. As she delves deeper into the dangerous world of drug trafficking, Kate questions her principles and struggles to survive. 13 – Barbarian (2022)

There is a deep fear that Barbarian touches on for many of us nowadays: what if the rental property we're staying at has secrets buried beneath the surface? When a young woman books an Airbnb, she arrives to find out someone else is already staying there, but when she decides to stay anyways, the other guest at the property isn't what she should be scared of in the end. 

This movie is constantly filled with surprising turns and as the movie continues, it reveals itself to be way more sinister than most viewers could ever think.

14 – The Invisible Man (2020)

The Invisible Man tells the story of Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) and the aftermath she has to deal with after her abusive ex takes his own life. She's left all of his money, and as time goes on, she's starting to believe he isn't really dead. She's constantly questioning the world around her, looking for the truth, and looking for her ex around every corner.

15 – Parasite (2019)

Parasite is a Korean thriller about a family who is desperate to make it out of the poverty they live in. The parents, with their two adult children, start working for a wealthy family, where they start to see their lives improve. The wealthy, upper-class family benefits from the other family's help, and the parasitical relationship between the two classes is formed. But the story gets darker as secrets are revealed.

This movie is a great representation of different class issues and how in society, these types of relationships affect us all.

16 – We Are Still Here (2015)

When a grieving couple moves up to the New England countryside after the death of their son, they're hoping to start a new life for themselves. But their new home has other plans when they find out a family of vengeful spirits live in the house with them. 

17 – Smile (2022)

Smile was a surprise hit for many horror fans last year and it topped the box office for weeks. When Rose (Sosie Bacon) witnesses a strange, traumatic event with one of her patients, she is convinced there's a dark force out to get her that she sees in the terrifying smiles of the people around her. 

18 – The Menu (2022)

This satirical thriller tells the story of a group of people who set out for a remote island where they're promised they'll have the foodie dining experience of a lifetime. But once they reach the island, the entire experience isn't what they thought it would be and it becomes a lot darker and more sinister.

This film takes on the culture of social media and foodies, and what lengths some people will go to have an over-the-top experience.

19 – The Night House (2020)

After recently losing her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) heads up to the home he built her in the woods. But as she spends more time looking at her past and in the home, she starts seeing horrific and terrifying visions. 

This movie really looks at depression and how hauntingly difficult it can be for those suffering from it. 

20 – Run (2020)

When a teenager, Chloe, notices her mother's strange behavior and a Change of Name Certificate, she starts becoming very wary of everything her mom does. But there's no escape from her as Chloe is homeschooled and her mom is everywhere in their home. The only thing Chloe can do is escape the home.
