Taking stock: Market declines in sluggish trade; gains for metal, PSU banks, and pharma are drags

The metal index increased by 1.3 percent, the PSU bank index by 0.7 percent, and the auto index by 0.4 percent, but the real estate and healthcare indices ended lower.

The top Nifty gainers included Hero MotoCorp, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Coal India, and LTIMindtree, while losers included Divis Laboratories, Nestle India, TCS, IndusInd Bank, and Asian Paints.
On October 16, the tumultuous session that saw the benchmark indices conclude on a negative note saw the Sensex drop 115.81 points or 0.17 percent to close at 66,166.93 and the Nifty drop 19.20 points or 0.10 percent to close at 19,731.80.

The market started out poorly, bringing the Nifty below 19,700 on the basis of mixed global cues, but it soon recovered and the day was marked by range-bound movement.
