NLC declares two-days nationwide protest over hardship

NLC Calls for Nationwide Protest to Address Economic Hardships.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a two-day nationwide mass protest set for February 27 and 28, aimed at drawing attention to the pervasive hardships faced by Nigerians.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, made this declaration during an emergency session held at Labour House, Abuja, on Friday.

The decision to organize the protest follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government regarding the nationwide challenges. This ultimatum was issued to underscore the urgent need for reforms to alleviate the ongoing difficulties experienced by citizens.

Key Points Highlighted by the NLC:

The NLC accuses the Federal Government of failing to implement agreements reached in October, citing persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and workers. Ajaero emphasized the necessity of the protest due to the significant hardships faced by Nigerians, leaving the NLC with no alternative. The ultimatum was initially announced by Ajaero during a media briefing last week, stressing the importance of the government honoring its commitments within the specified timeframe. Last May, President Bola Tinubu’s administration took steps to remove a costly fuel subsidy and lifted restrictions on currency trading, resulting in a substantial increase in petrol prices. The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a two-week ultimatum to the government on February 8, demanding various reforms such as wage increments and improved access to public utilities. Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy, is currently grappling with a cost of living crisis exacerbated by its highest inflation rate in nearly three decades. Insecurity has further impacted agricultural output, contributing to food price inflation. The unions have given the government 14 days to address critical issues affecting the well-being of Nigerian citizens and workers.
