Only a couple knows what it takes to create a life and call them parents. And if due to some unforeseen circumstances and reasons, they could not conceive, then the most delightful time in their life turns into an ordeal. If not for IVF, many of these motherhood-seeking women or parenthood-seeking couples would have lost hope and been devastated for their lifetimes. And Dr Chandan Nagaraj, Scientific Director and Chief Embryologist came as their best hope.

After creating 5000 plus babies through IVF procedures at various organizations, Dr Chandan says it’s his privilege to serve infertile couples as an Embryologist for the past 15 years. “Privileged because delivering parenthood to child-seeking couples is the most inspirational feeling in the world,” he says.

His inspiration behind his venturing into this niche had been his mother. “When I was in college, my mother told me about my birth. It took her six years to bring me into this world. She narrated the pain which she had gone through in that six years. Probably this incident was seeded deep into my mind to be what I am now.,” recalls Dr Chandan, a certified embryology practitioner by the American College of Embryology. He is also the Scientific Director of Embryology at ARC Fertility, Aikya Academy, and Lanka Embryology & Andrology Training Academy.

An Awe-Inspiring Optimism

For any organization, embryologist roles are very important to achieve the best success rate by maintaining high standards in embryology. Simultaneously, following the ethical code of conduct by the law. Due to this, Dr Chandan and his team always keep themselves updated. A Doctor’s Humane Touch

His students and patients are extremely satisfied with the way Dr Chandan and his team coordinates to keep them happy and satisfied with what they came for. Concerning patient satisfaction, he and his team follow the best treatment procedure customized per the patient’s medical history. “We are with them on a one-on-one basis all the time. We ensure they are comfortable and taken care of. We treat them as humans rather than patients.”

Being an experienced leader, sharing his opinion on how the adoption of modern technologies like Artificial intelligence is impacting Healthcare and how organizations are adapting to the change, Dr Chandan says AI is an upcoming technology in the field of ART. “AI is the information we feed into machines.” Since the human brain cannot process millions of data in a fraction of a second, a computer can do it. AI should be a tool for embryologists to assist the fertility Era in taking the right decision at the right time. But We can’t depend entirely on a machines that can’t understand a patient’s emotions. When it is needed we can always boycott what a machine says to take our own decisions based on our life experiences concerning different situations which we face in the day-to-day embryology lab.”

Abolishing Obstacles

Considering the current industry scenario, Dr Chandan shares that there are some challenges he faces, and he has to overcome them regularly. Giving a high success rate in IVF treatment and keeping patients happy is one of the biggest challenges for any IVF centre. “If we look back at our ancestors or just two generations back, having a child was not a concern for our grandparents or parents. They had at least three to ten siblings in a family which they called a joint family. But in this present generation, a father and mother struggle to call them a family. Infertility rates are increasing because of our lifestyle, Environment, stress etc. all this has become part of our life and it is inevitable. As medical professionals, we face many challenges and work sincerely to make their dreams come true which patients should understand

Many students who want to do their best in embryology do not succeed because of the lack of proper guidance and help. In his organization, Dr Chandan makes sure they grow along with him. Once they complete the course it is not the end but it is the beginning of their professional life along with Dr Chandan. He guides them throughout their life to contribute best to the field of embryology.

The Crucial Cause

According to Dr Chandan, healthcare solutions are very crucial today. And there are significant advancements that can be expected in the future. Being and following a healthy lifestyle is very important for the present generation. Taking the example of the past two decades, the fertility ratio has fallen alarmingly. The General Fertility Rate (GFR) has declined in India by 20% over the past decade. GFR refers to the number of children born per 1,000 women per year in the reproductive age group of 18-49 years.

The average GFR in India stood at 86.1 from 2008 to 2010 (three years average) and has come down to 68.7 during 2018-20 (average of three years), according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) data 2020 released recently.
