Texan Nationalists Urge Abbott to “Fully Militarize” State Guard to Combat Biden’s “Attempt To Keep the Border Wide Open”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been urged to expand and militarize the Texas State Guard if President Joe Biden chooses to federalize the Texas National Guard.

Abbott’s Border Policies

Democratic Texas Representatives Greg Casar and Joaquin Castro, much to the horror of Texan nationalists, have advised Biden to federalize the Texas National Guard if Abbott doesn’t back down from his current border policies.

The Supreme Court recently decided that Texas cannot use razor wire along the southern border. Naturally, Abbott was furious, and he’s since said that Texas “won’t back down.”

The Supreme Law of the Land

The Republican governor compared the increase in migration to an “invasion.” He also said that Texas has “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself,” and he declared that to be “the supreme law of the land,” superseding “any federal statutes to the contrary.”

Daniel Miller is the president of the Texas Nationalist Movement, a group seeking the state’s independence from the rest of the country. Miller took to social media to call on Abbott to drastically expand the State Guard if Biden federalizes the National Guard.

“If Biden federalizes the Texas National Guard, Greg Abbott should immediately throw enlistment in the Texas State Guard WIDE OPEN, fully militarize them, and deploy them as a Border Protection Force along the entire border,” the Texan nationalist wrote.

There is currently no established process to federalize the State Guard, which is likely what prompted Miller’s suggestion. It consists of approximately 1,900 personnel, significantly fewer than the larger Texas National Guard, which boasts a strength of around 23,000.

Operation Lone Star was initiated by Abbott in 2021 to enhance border security. A substantial portion of the Texas National Guard is actively participating in it.

Federal Government Involvement

“When Abbott first began using the Texas National Guard for Operation Lone Star, there was always a risk that the federal government would call the Guard into federal service and order them to stand down,” Miller said, speaking to Newsweek.

He continued: “This is precisely why it’s been our position since 2012 that the Texas State Guard should be the primary vehicle used by the Texas Military Department for border protection.”

The Authority of the Governor

“By law, the Texas State Guard cannot be federalized and remain solely under the authority of the Governor of the State of Texas,” the Texan nationalist explained.

A Prediction Proven Right

Miller went on to claim that the Texas Nationalist Movement “predicted this would ultimately be the tactic used by the federal government in an attempt to keep the Texas border wide open to the cartels, and yet again, we’ve been proven right.”

Federal vs. State

Tray Gober, an attorney from Texas, warned Abbott not to ignore the Supreme Court decision. “Supreme Court rulings are the law of the land. Federal law is supreme to any conflicting state law,” he said in an interview with Newsweek.

Two Historical Examples

“It’s not unprecedented for state or local officials to refuse to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. Two historical examples come to mind,” the attorney continued.

Brown v. Board of Education

Gober elaborated by calling back to the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case in which the Supreme Court declared the segregation of Black and White students in schools to be unconstitutional. “Several southern states resisted implementing desegregation,” he said.

President Eisenhower’s Response

President Eisenhower, in response to the refusal, federalized the Arkansas National Guard and deployed the 101st Airborne Division to uphold the court’s ruling.

Gober moved on to his second example, which involved Kim Davies — a county clerk in Kentucky — refusing to give same-gender couples marriage licenses even after the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.

The decision legalized same-gender marriage across the country, and Davies’ refusal led to a brief stint in jail for contempt of court.

Political Strategy vs. Constitution

Gober concluded by urging Abbott to “put a higher priority on his oath to support the Constitution of the United States rather than observing a political strategy.”
