Unemployed? Here’s the Salaries of 2 “Essential” Jobs in the COVID-19 Era

A salary is the bribe offered to employees so they’ll perpetually defer their ambition and dreams.

Yes, a very cynical way to look at salaried employment, but I used to think that way back when I was a cubicle drone.

It’s easy to take a salary job for granted when one believes that there are no better options.

Now, over 40 million Americans have lost their jobs since March 2020.

I was an academic adviser and a college adjunct instructor long ago. I’m applying for online instructor work now.

Contact tracing sounds like interesting work, but there is online training and Certification involved. It’s free too on some sites.

Since salaried jobs are not something to take for granted now, here are two essential jobs in high demand now.

Contact Tracing

In the age of Covid-19, contract tracing is a vocation in high demand.

Up to 300,000 COVID-19 contact tracers will be needed in the short-term future to help contain and potentially cure COVID-19.

Contact tracers are basically health detectives.

They are are professionally trained to identify people Infected with COVID-19.

They try to find out when and how the infected person became infected and logistically work backwards to identify potential infection chains.

Contact tracers use investigation, technology, and science to track down everyone the infected person came into contact with after they became infected.

Every area with surging COVID-19 infection rates, and infection rate spiking potential in the future, need expertly trained contact tracers now.

Contact tracers can make as much as $65,000 or more since the skill is in high demand.

Also, you can get all of the training and skills required to become a contact tracer absolutely free.

Coursera, an online learning portal, and John Hopkins University are offering free online certification classes in COVID-19 contact tracing.  And, you’ll receive official certification after course completion.

Online Education Instructor

Teaching is not technically essential from a legal standpoint, but it is morally essential.

Over 54 million American students, from kindergarten to campuses of higher learning, are stuck at home because of the pandemic.

As many as 1.5 billion students are now affected by school closures caused by COVID-19 globally.

The deficiencies of online learning have been made apparent. The online learning experience can’t replace the in-class yet.

However, professional online education instructors will be high demand for the foreseeable future.

These online education companies specialize in matching native English-speaking tutors with young students in foreign countries via video learning:

  • Cambly Inc.
  • Magic Ears
  • VipKid

Coursera has free and low-priced online courses offering certification.

You can also find similarly free and affordable courses at EdX.

If you have experience teaching or tutoring, it shouldn’t be hard for you to find online teaching work.

The average starting salary for online education instructors begins at $12,000.

That pay estimate increases commensurately with your level of experience, skills, and certification.

If you’re out of work, make a list of your skills and consider your options in this COVID-19 world.

You may not find the job you want now, but you may find something you need in the meantime.

That’s not something to take for granted now.
