You may have seen these and you may have not, either way, we think any Forex trader could enjoy watching these movies and TV shows that deal with trading (amongst other things).
Dirty Money
Netflix has created some fantastic docuseries on various topics, and Dirty Money is no exception. Taking a dive into some of the most notorious financial crimes each episode goes into the details and explains key Financial concepts and the issues with each case. ‘You get to learn about how the system works as well as the missteps you should avoid,’ says Cathy Lawson, a technical writer at Best Australian writers and Academic advisor.
There are two seasons, 6 episodes each, available at the moment and may be worth making your next binge watch if you are looking to enter the world of investing. Made years before the financial crash, this 1999 classic starring Ewan McGregor looks at the lengths people will go to on the Stock Exchange to cover mistakes and gives a good warning to those interested in becoming traders. Based on the memoirs of Nick Leeson, a former trader who went bankrupt in the Asian financial crisis, the Movie talks about how not to deal with a market decline.
The Wizard of Lies
Bernie Madoff is one of those names that is infamous when thinking of the worst examples of financial criminals. This film focuses on the pyramid scheme Madoff created under the pretense it was an Investment Company and the impact of his downfall on his family. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are captivating to watch as always and this TV movie ended up Nominated for 4 primetime Emmys. This is definitely worth taking some time to watch to see why any pyramid-style investment should be avoided at all costs.
The Big Short
Covering the space of time from 2005 until the 2008 crisis, The Big Short is famous for a reason. Following three different groups of people dealing with the market collapse, this movie looks at how everyone tries to get their benefit before everything falls apart. It is based on the real-life testimony of Michael Lewis and focuses on those who saw the collapse before it happened. ‘It does a brilliant job of explaining more complex terminology for you and keeps you engaged from start to finish,’ raves Peter Durante, a business writer at UK Services reviews and Simple Grad.
With a star-studded cast and boasting an Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay, this film is a must if you want to learn more about trading topics but are worried about staying engaged with the material.
Billions
This high-stakes financial drama is not strictly about trading but does give you a pretty good view of trading practices. It’s a fictional story based on the actual history of the financial industry and the issues that come from insider trading. It is currently on its sixth season giving you plenty to binge as you catch up with the latest events while also providing you with some fascinating looks into the cat and mouse battle between the trader and the federal attorney trying to take him down. It’s not perfect for all viewers but has been widely successful boasting a rating on IMDB of 8/10 stars at the time of writing.
Quants: The Alchemists of Wall Street
This 2010 documentary takes time to look at the programmers and mathematicians, known as Quants, working in the finance industry and the role they played in the stock exchange. There is a lot of time focused on maths and formulas but it gives a fascinating look at how traders should avoid getting carried away by the numbers.
The Pit
Released in 2009, this documentary gives a frank and immersive look at the rhythm of trading and the positives and negatives of the industry. With interviews of both experienced traders and those just starting out trading, this gives you a great insight into how things work and the impact of transitioning to electronic trading.
Becoming Warren Buffett
Another famous investor that most of us are familiar with, this 2018 documentary tells the story of how one of the richest people in the world remains humble while looking at how he made his billions trading.
The Wolf of Wall Street
Definitely one of the best trading movies, Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street is shameless and exciting. It’s one of the most entertaining films ever made about loathsome men.
The movie follows risk-taking Wall Street stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) amasses wealth with his brash. With his trusted lieutenant (Jonah Hill) and a merry band of brokers, Belfort makes a huge fortune by defrauding wealthy investors out of millions.
