Veterans Day is a well know American Holiday. It was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end fighting of World War I on November 11, 1918.  After more than four years of fighting Germany and the Allies agreed to a truce on the Eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This was considered to be the end of “the war to end all wars” and quickly became know as Armistice Day. In 1938 Congress made it an official holiday to honor the Veterans of World War I.

If you’re looking for a way to show your appreciation to our past and present members of the military here are some ideas.

• Be There -Attend a Veterans Day parade or service in your area.  Roy Rogers said “We can’t all be heroes, someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.”
• Donate – There are many great organizations that offer support to our veterans. Here is a link showing a few of them from our friends at Military.Com to help get you started.
• Fly Our Flag
• Ask someone about their service
• Don’t confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day – Memorial Day commemorates those who lost their lives in service to our county.  Confusing the two diminishes the importance of both.
• Visit a VA Hospital – Many VA facilities will have events or a special lunch on Veterans Day.  Volunteering is always a meaningful way to give back
