Power To The Policy Holder: What To Expect When Filing For A Claim

Insurance policies are always a tricky thing to understand. As a consumer, you have to understand that some Insurance providers may be initially hesitant to entertain your claims because, of course, they run a business. And to have a business survive for many years, the best auto insurance in California should be especially strict and thorough in reviewing insurance claims. However, you do have to know your rights both as a plan holder and as a law-abiding citizen of this state. Hence, we’re offering you a “checklist” of sorts to know that you’re not being blackballed by your insurance provider.

Let’s say that you have been involved in a car accident and you want to have your claims enacted quickly. A general rule of thumb is that your provider should acknowledge to have received your claim within 15 days of filing. They also have the responsibility of determining the validity of your claim and, subsequently, process the due settlement that can be both fair and impartial for each party (i.e. you and your insurance provider).

With that said, there may be those rare instances where an agent of your insurance provider has denied you payment without any known reason whatsoever. If that was so, try talking to that agent or his/her supervisor. It may be that that person has violated your state’s insurance regulations, even without him/her knowing it. However, if your provider continues to ignore you, you can then file a complaint with your state’s insurance department for grievance committed against you by said provider.

If worse comes to worst, then the state may permit you to state your case in the judiciary. There are well-known cases in which class actions have been taken against some prominent insurance providers. Even if you have hired a lawyer, it may be to your advantage if you’re aware of what kind of charges you can pin your provider with, like their coverage being stated too broadly, the provisions for exclusion being all-inclusive, or even if you feel that their policy in general has been stated too broadly or intangibly.

However, not all things have to come to lawsuits and “blows”. If you want to avoid the trouble of being played by an unscrupulous insurance provider, it’s probably better if you know what kind of provider to get. For one, observe if an agent or representative have taken to great lengths to explain what kind of policy you’re buying. If they’re confusing you with “financial” terms like deductibles and exclusions, do your homework and read up on the common policies that are enacted by a majority of insurance providers across the state.

You also have the responsibility of taking track of all your actions prior to filing your claim. For example, are you sure that you have reviewed your copy of its policies carefully? Is your conscience clear enough to state your claim honestly? These may be minor things, but it’s the right step in finding out the best auto insurance in California.
