Moving on a Budget is Easier than you think

Tags: moving idea stuff

The Idea of Moving into a new home can be overwhelming. There’s far too much to think about and the packing process can be incredibly long and drawn out. In fact, many people hate the idea of moving so much that they’ll be willing to stay in their current home and ignore all the benefits of moving to a new location. Be it moving closer to your workplace or finding a new school for their kids, there are plenty of pros to moving but if the idea of doing it puts you off, then you’re going to be giving up those benefits.

Here are some fantastic ideas on how to move on a budget without spending too much money, and also how to speed up the entire process to make it smoother.

Decide what to strip and what to leave

Things like your child’s bedroom and bathroom don’t need to be completely stripped, especially if you’re renting. If you’ve done a few DIY projects in a rented apartment then it’s a good idea to write down what you’ve done since you’ve moved in so you can let your landlord know, but there’s no need to completely wipe away all the changes and reset your property back to its original state. It’s expensive to do last-minute renovations, so avoid spending too much on your property when you plan to move.

Get rid of more stuff

People don’t seem to realize how much junk they have until they move. A couple of weeks before your move date, make sure you start packing and getting rid of the stuff you don’t need. Either sell it or give it away to charity, and you’ll realize that you can drastically cut down on the amount of stuff you need to move. The money you make from selling your goods could go towards your moving costs and save you a lot of money.

Research movers

Another good thing to do is research different moving companies. You’ll come across services like mybekins.com if you look online and it’s never a bad idea to look for local solutions too. It’s usually a bad idea to rely on friends and family especially if they’re not experienced in moving because they could end up breaking something important to you. It’s much cheaper to rely on people you know, but the level of service is going to be lower.

Save boxes

Whether it’s boxes from grocery orders or boxes that come with the stuff you buy, save them! Unpack the boxes so they’re flat and store them somewhere like your pantry or basement so that when it comes time to move, you don’t need to buy a bunch of boxes to move all of your stuff.

Make sure you change addresses and cancel utilities

The last thing you want is to be paying for utilities you’re not using, so make sure you cancel and move your utilities and move when they’re just about to expire for the month so you don’t pay for another month. Also, remember to change addresses if needed!

Moving can be a tough task that no one wants to do.  It really shouldn’t be harder than we make it.  Don’t rush into moving somewhere or you may forget a step in the moving process.
