U.S. Gouvernment have prepared an unpleasant surprise for all quadcopters owners out there. Drone registration will be necessary with the Department of Transportation, regardless the model.

According to Fortune.com, Federal officials will make this public on Monday. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and F.A.A. Administrator Michael Huerta will hold a press conference in Washington D.C. to explain the government’s plans to create a new registration system that all Drone buyers will be required to use.

Commercial users are privileged

Previously, only commercials users were required to register their little aircrafts, but now drone registration will be mandatory, meaning that even those who use them for fun need to report to the F.A.A. It looks that recent incidents determined the Gouvernment to take this decision.

The same source states that the Los Angeles Police Department helicopter that was disturbed by a man flying its quadcopter and a drone that crash landed at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in September, were the tip of the iceberg for Federal officials.

Privacy advocates have also encouraged drone registration arguing that drones outfitted with cameras could be used to spy on people. A source told fortune.com that the plan orchestrated by the U.S. Government consist in a task force that includes members of the government and the drone industry to create all drones registration.

The programs should start by the end of November

The drone registration system is supposed to start around the Thanksgiving holiday, but The Transportation Department declined to comment the data exposed by fortune.com. However, they confirmed that the department
will “make an important safety announcement about the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems” on Monday.
