Federal Government Reopens Old MMA Terminal to Enhance Air Travel Experience – In a strategic move to streamline operations and offer relief to air travelers, the Federal Government has green-lighted the reopening of the D Wing at the old international Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
Why This Move?
The decision comes in the wake of rising challenges experienced by passengers and airlines in Nigeria. The recent swift shift of foreign airlines from the international terminal of the Lagos airport to a freshly inaugurated terminal this past March amplified these challenges.
The old terminal, previously closed for refurbishments, is being reintroduced to the fold to alleviate these disruptions and ensure a more fluid experience for travelers.
Official Announcement
The news was announced on Monday by the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo. A statement from the Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, highlighted the government’s dedicated efforts to uplift the aviation sector. The statement elaborated, “This is to inform the traveling public that the Hon. Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has graciously allowed the use of the D Wing of the Old Murtala Muhammed International terminal to complement the New International Terminal in order to ease the facilitation of passengers through the airport.”
A Series of Events
It’s worth noting that Keyamo had previously directed airlines to shift operations to the new terminal by October 1, 2023. However, FAAN took matters into their own hands, relocating the international carriers to the facility in an abrupt move. This sudden decision coincided with a fire outbreak in the baggage hall of the MMIA, leading to the immediate evacuation of passengers and personnel.
Commenting on the situation, the Director of Media at FAAN, Mr. Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, identified the fire and subsequent power supply issues as the driving forces behind the hasty relocation of foreign carriers. Assuring travelers and stakeholders, he mentioned that FAAN is diligently addressing the matter.
