Long Weekend in Athens

There is so much to see and do in Athens, Greece! While visiting Athens, I had three days to explore the ancient city and make the most of my vacation.

First of all, my name  Irina is of Greek origin and the meaning of Irina is “Peace”. Irina was the Goddess of Peace in ancient Greek mythology. So now you know why I am such a nice person Hahah!

A visit to Athens will not be completed without a visit to the Acropolis. Acropolis of Athens is listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Acropolis also means “high city” in Greek and is literally built on the tallest hill in the city.

Located on the slope of Acropolis is the Theatre of Herodes Atticus. It was built by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. The theater is still used for musical and theatrical performances.

Great views of the city as you walk up the slope to Acropolis.

The Parthenon is a Temple on the Acropolis dedicated to the Greek Goddess Athena.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus: The largest temple of the ancient ruins in Athens and conveniently located in the heart of the city. It won’t take long to visit the site but it is quite impressive. Be sure not to miss it!

Greek Food: Be sure to try a traditional Greek salad, Lamb and Gyro Pita! It’s cheap, tasty and you can find them on EVERY corner! (Salads 6€/Pitas 2.70€)

Flea Market in Monastiraki: Head to Monastiraki district just under the Acropolis. Wander around the flea market and buy souvenirs and gifts for your friends.

Stroll the paved streets of Plaka: Located at the foot of Acropolis, it’s the oldest neighbourhood of Athens. Plaka is a picturesque neighbourhood with the narrow streets, neoclassical houses, shops, restaurants and ruins from the Roman era.
