This year’s Kentucky Derby will be the 143rd one. The event, held on May 6, 2017 (it's always held on the first Saturday in May) at Churchill Downs is the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. 20 horses will race on a course that’s larger than most racecourses or fields. The Derby’s also known for amazing hats, parties and juleps.

A Mint Julep is the traditional drink of the race. Over two days, the Kentucky Derby sells over 80,000 of them. The recipe is pretty easy: bourbon, crushed ice, mint leaves and sugar syrup. Traditionally, a julep is served in either a pewter or a silver cup. Etiquette dictates that you hold the cup by the bottom and the edges of it. In a book dated 1784, Mint Juleps were prescribed for upset stomachs. That’s pretty tasty medicine.
Blade and Bow 22-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has been re-released to coincide with the Derby. Woodford Reserve partners with the Derby and creates $1000 juleps housed in special cups. The proceeds go to charity. Click here for that information.
I’ve rounded up a selection of Julep recipes. Some juleps are made with coffee, champagne, rye, whiskey, tequila as well as the traditional bourbon. There’s also two scrummy vodka-based cocktails and an updated Old Fashioned that's perfect for the Derby too.
Read on for the recipes.
