London is renowned as one of the menswear capitals of the world. LUXE Models considers the influence that the London clothing industry continues to hold on men’s Fashion.
The early beginnings of the global ‘fashion industry’ date back to 17th Century London, where Charles II invented the three-piece suit in 1666 which started a revolution in cloth. Since then, many influences from overseas have made their way into UK fashion and nowadays, most of the city’s clothing is imported from elsewhere.
Modern influences
London had arguably lost its way somewhat, but now a new era of London-based designers are helping the city recapture its status as the capital of global fashion. Individual stars include Craig Green, Christopher Shannon, Astrid Andersen, Nasir Mazhar and Agi & Sam.
The London Collections: Men fashion week was created in 2012 and symbolised the latest movement which has cemented itself on the fashion calendar. America has since followed suit, with New York Fashion Week: Men’s starting this June. Alexander McQueen and Burberry Prorsum have both returned to the UK following the success of the Collections week and home-grown talents such as Oliver Spencer and James Long have seen success on the back of it.
Fashion power
Of course, the likes of Paris and Milan have far more global appeal and advertising muscle than London – both in male and female fashion. However, the UK’s capital city is challenging the two main powers with diversity and creativity.
Examples of a pragmatic approach from London’s fashion designers include Nasir Mazhar’s sportswear, Craig Green’s denims and cotton which is perfect for spring and Christopher Sammon’s unique approach with plastic bags on his models.
Menswear is no longer restricted to ‘what a man should wear’ and has more of an emphasis on identity, with tracksuits now just as important to London’s fashion as suits. Men’s fashion is on the up as a whole, with brave new territories being explored. It’s becoming a glorious spectrum and London is certainly leading the way in shaping the future of men’s fashion. And there seems to be infinite talent to help determine the destination.
