Underwear as outerwear

When it comes to fashion, the 90s was a strange but wonderful time. During this decade minimalism became huge, 70s styles made a roaring comeback, the world embraced haphazard grunge fashions and rave culture took the fashion industry by storm. One of the biggest trends of the 90s saw people start to wear Underwear as outerwear, with Slip dresses becoming extremely popular.

What’s the golden rule of fashion? Whatever goes out usually comes back in. Throughout the past few years, as The Telegraph points out, the underwear as outerwear trend has made a comeback. Stars like Alexa Chung, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller have found innovative ways to update this daring trend for 2016, providing the world with fun new exciting ways to rock underwear as outerwear!

Influence of North

Back in the 90s, those who were particularly avante guarde adopted a unique approach to the underwear as outerwear trend. They wore Slip Dresses over t-shirts and zip up jackets, something that really shouldn’t have worked but kind of did. This bold trend has apparently captured the imagination of the Kardashian-Jenners, according to OK Magazine.

The gossip mag wrote that recently, Kim Kardashian was pictured wearing a black evening slip dress over a zip up Adidas jacket, teaming the ensemble with stunning heels to complete the look. Writing on her blog, the ‘woman who broke the internet’ later revealed that the look was inspired by her young daughter with rapper Kanye West, North West.

Explaining Kim wrote:  “I love to dress North in slip dresses and layer T-shirts underneath, so I figured I would copy her ’90s vibe for my latest street-style look.” Thanks to her fabulous mum, North West is a future fashion icon in the making! But with her genes we’re not surprised!

Popular family style

But Kim isn’t the only Kardashian-Jenner who has embraced this trend recently. Kim’s half-sister Kylie Jenner has also taken to championing the look. Reports suggest that when she recently attended the Coachella Music festival, Kylie chose to wear a black slip dress over a white t-shirt, pairing the look with a light pink wig and a Louis Vuitton head scarf. Genius!

Kylie’s sister Kendall Jenner has also embraced the look. On a recent outing with model Gigi Hadid, Kendall embraced the trend but ditched the dark colours. Instead, she opted for a baby pink slip dress with a silk kimono and a pair of thigh-high boots.  We simply adore this!

Exciting style trend

Over the last five years or so, the Kardashian-Jenners have become the ultimate arbiters of style. If they say the slip dress-over-shirt thing is back, then there’s reason to believe we’ll see the trend everywhere in 2016.
